About Anna
I am a certified and licensed professional Spanish educator with 15 years of teaching experience: 6 years of public school experience, 3 years of private tutoring experience, and 6 years of homeschool education experience. My kids are 13 and 11 and fairly fluent, can understand songs and movies (if they don't talk too fast!), order from menus, navigate a airport, read stories and poetry, conjugate regular and irregular verbs (and reflexive, stem-changing or irregular yo!), make their adjectives agree with their nouns, and are comfortable conversing about a wide range of topics in Spanish.
I have wanted to be a teacher since I was 6 years old and a Spanish teacher since middle school. Now that my children are in public school, I still teach them, but am interested in sharing my passion that learning a foreign language should be fun and interesting with more students! I truly believe that with effort and help, anyone can learn a foreign language - and Spanish is a beautiful one to start with - and who knows, maybe you will continue with the other romance languages, using Spanish as your base to learn French, Portuguese, Italian, or Romanian. Maybe you will use it to learn a bit of Filipino or even to study Latin for a career in medicine. So many opportunities open up with the acquisition of a foreign language!

Relying on professional foreign language training and proven and tried classroom experience, my teaching technique is very learner-centered. I really love tutoring beginning language learners (US Spanish 1 or Spanish 2) and attempting to spark the love of learning a new language and the confidence that, with focus and practice, anyone can learn a new language. Knowing that students learn in a variety of different ways, I try to plan my lessons to incorporate speaking, listening, writing, reading, and movement. When working with middle school, high school, or even college-age students, I have found that lessons structured in the following way are effective.
A typical lesson begins with reinforcing basic, daily vocabulary (date, time, weather) and Q/A to review basic conversational skills. This is followed by a review of vocabulary and grammar concepts from the previous lesson, checking in with student about upcoming needs (assignments, tests, vocabulary lists, grammar concepts), practice of the lesson's focus material, and ending with a speaking, listening, or conversational activity. I have found that those I tutor most want to become more fluent in speaking and understanding Spanish, but it is also what language students feel the least confident and most nervous about, as well as what seems to be lacking most in language learning classrooms. I think that intentionally making space for conversation, speaking and/or listening, even if for only a brief portion of each session, sets me apart from other tutors.
