About Alyssa
I am a passionate Spanish educator with an M.A. in Second Language Acquisition and 15 years of classroom experience. I genuinely love the one-on-one setting most. I can pinpoint exactly what's holding a student back and fix it directly. My Teaching Method and Techniques
I approach language teaching as a mix of structure and real communication. My lessons are built around getting students actually using the language as early and as often as possible, with understandable grammar practice. I use the ACTFL proficiency approach and have created programs to increase fluency from novice to intermediate to Advanced. Depending on the student, that might mean guided conversation practice, error correction built into natural dialogue instead of red-pen worksheets, spaced vocabulary review, or oral proficiency drills modeled on the same interview format I've administered professionally for ACTFL.
A Typical Lesson
A typical lesson starts with a few minutes of warm-up conversation in Spanish, at the student's level, to activate what they already know and get them speaking right away rather than easing in with review. From there we move into the day's focus; a grammar structure, a vocabulary set, a reading, or exam prep, worked through with plenty of guided practice, not just explanation. Even a "grammar" lesson includes a speaking or listening component, because proficiency comes from use, not just knowledge. We close with a quick, low-pressure check for understanding, and I send the student away with one specific, small task to reinforce what we covered as well as a suggestion for a fun way to use Spanish.
What Sets Me Apart
I hold an M.A. in Second Language Acquisition and am ACTFL certified as a Spanish rater, so I'm not guessing at where a student's proficiency sits. I'm trained to assess it the same way national certification exams do. I have 15 years of classroom experience.
Who My Lessons Are For
I work with a wide range of students: middle and high schoolers who need to keep up with or get ahead in their school's Spanish class, students prepping for the AP exam, college students in beginner through advanced courses, and adult learners building conversational fluency for travel, work, or personal goals. I've taught every level from absolute beginner to advanced, in both classroom and one-on-one settings, so I can meet a student exactly where they are.
