About Iain

When I was in school, I struggled with math. And once I fell behind, it was hard to catch up again. Some years after I left high school, I still had shame around my poor showing in math, and I was looking to return to school, so I took it upon myself to self-teach, until I could perform at a level suitable for college enrollment. I taught myself algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and pre-calculus (with the help of some great books on those subjects) and found that being able to focus my attention on one thing at a time, and to work at the pace and schedules that worked for me, as well as a focus on mastery and understanding, made all the difference. I've worked as a STEM professional ever since. After a few months of self-paced study, I enrolled in college, placing directly into the Calculus curriculum. Over the next six years, I experienced high academic achievement, completing the requirements for a degree in Software Engineering and a minor in Mathematics, including discrete math, statistics, four levels of calculus, and differential equations. I know what it is to feel overwhelmed by math, and inadequate because of it. I also know what it is to discover that approach, environment, and patience can make all the difference, and to find in yourself an unexpected love of learning.

About the lesson

My lessons are practical, supportive, and tailored to the individual student. The first step is always understanding where the student is now—what they’re learning, what concepts feel unclear, and where their confidence has slipped.

When a student has homework or current school material, we use that as a starting point. Working through real examples helps identify gaps in understanding, not just gaps in answers. Rather than simply correcting work, I focus on helping students notice patterns, explain their reasoning, and build strategies they can use independently.

When a student doesn’t have homework, I draw from high-quality, research-backed resources such as the MARS/MathShell curriculum (designed for deep mathematical understanding). These tasks are excellent for strengthening number sense, algebra foundations, and problem-solving skills.

Lessons typically include:

step-by-step explanations grounded in clear reasoning

guided practice to reinforce understanding

gentle correction and confidence-building techniques

real-life examples when helpful

optional hands-on or visual approaches for tricky concepts (diagrams, objects, simple manipulatives)

Maths is much more than memorising procedures — it’s about understanding why things work. My goal is to help students feel calm, capable, and confident with numbers, whether they’re catching up, keeping up, or rebuilding skills as adults returning to study.
