About Kieran

I am an experienced teacher who has been teaching a broad range of subjects including GCSE and functional skills English as well as ESOL from Elementary level up to IELTS. I have also taught sociology and psychology at level 2 (GCSE) and level 3 (A' level and Access to Higher Education). My original speciality, however, is popular music and I have recently completed my masters' degree in Critical Musicology which has enabled me to develop a range of original and up-to-date seminars about popular and classical music and art and philosophy more broadly. One of me keenest strengths as a tutor is the ability to make otherwise complex ideas and theories accessible to inexperienced learners.
My teaching methods tend to utilise a range of media and popular cultural materials and references so as to engage a broad range of learners with different interests and from different age groups and cultural backgrounds. I am, furthermore, very adept at researching new ideas and teaching materials and I always endeavour to stay current with my knowledge of teaching and learning.

About the lesson

One of my priorities when meeting new learners is to uncover what their interests are and what engages them in order for me to devise the most appropriate programme and method of teaching to ensure they remain motivated and focused. Lessons are often structured around a text, video or news report from which I attempt to elicit a range of ideas and understandings from learners which can then be employed as a basis for progress. For example, a video clip of a Barcelona FC football match can be a rich source for developing language through descriptive speaking/writing and reporting/explaining key events. Once the context and content of the video clip has been thoroughly examined it is then possible to draw on the many peripheral aspects of football such as who is your favourite player and why? Or, Comment upon a controversial event that occurred among last weekend's football fixtures.

My rates may alter depending on the travel distance, level of intensity and preparatory demands of a lesson (e.g. exam prep and practice) but this will be quickly and easily established through negotiation with the client.
