About SharpenYourWriting

I work with students of all ages, locally in-person in Silicon Valley or anywhere in the world online (Google Meet/Zoom), to improve your ability to communicate effectively (native and non-native English speakers). Writing is thinking!

Experienced English reading/writing tutor available for children, ESL students, and those involved in business communications. I taught and tutored writing and reading comprehension for K-12 students part-time at a local learning center for almost three years and have been tutoring for five. I also write and edit marketing material and content for corporate clients as a freelance global strategic communications consultant. My history essay received the first prize in the 2019 California Pioneers essay contest and will become part of their reference collection!

Back to school after a summer slide? Research suggests that kids can lose up to 2.6 months of academic skills such as reading and writing over the summer!

For parents, older students and professionals: Employers Want Strong Writers

Recent research proves that written communication skills are at the top of employers' wish lists. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, 73.4% of employers want a candidate with strong written communication skills. Written communication was the number three most desired quality overall, behind leadership skills and ability to work as a team member.

Jason Fried, founder of Basecamp (and Inc. columnist), also commented on the importance of hiring those with strong writing skills in his book, Rework. "If you are trying to decide among a few people to fill a position, hire the best writer. [His/her] writing skills will pay off. That's because being a good writer is about more than writing clear writing. Clear writing is a sign of clear thinking. Great writers know how to communicate. They make things easy to understand. They can put themselves in someone else's shoes. They know what to omit. And those are qualities you want in any candidate. Writing is making a comeback all over our society...Writing is today's currency for good ideas," he wrote.

My lessons include working with students to learn how to develop any or all of the following skills:

️Ideas--the main message

️Organization--the internal structure of the piece

️Voice--the personal tone and flavor of the author's message

️Word Choice--the vocabulary a writer chooses to convey meaning

️Sentence Fluency--the rhythm and flow of the language

️Conventions--the mechanical correctness

️Presentation--how the writing actually looks on the page

️Grammar

️Reading Comprehension--both literary and informational text

️Test Prep

Let me know how I can help!

As students advance in school, writing well becomes even more important across all academic subjects. Your child doesn't always get the individual feedback or extra support they need at school. There are few professions that don't require at least some writing (e.g., engineering, police work, teaching, or entrepreneurship).

My focus and what I find satisfying is giving you or your child the encouragement, support, practice, practical knowledge, resources and tools to build confidence and find success on the writing journey. Writing is thinking!
