About Matthew

After success in my undergraduate degree, including an award for medieval studies, I decided to continue to pursue academia. I believe that a student’s interest in a topic is the greatest factor in their learning: curiosity is the driving force behind all academia, particularly the humanities and arts. Engagement is the primary goal. It is all too easy for students to see texts as another piece of information to absorb, when in fact art exists to be questioned. I see my role as encouraging students to ask questions and develop their own views, while also providing support for their academic improvement. A bored pupil will rarely improve, however talented they might be, while even the most struggling student can greatly improve their grades when their passion for the subject is inflamed. To that end, I aim to provide warm, engaging tutoring, focusing on interpretation and hopefully enjoyment. I don’t believe in worksheets or repetition, rather discussion, experimentation, and personal expression.
