About Derek
I am a senior undergratuate in Biological Sciences at Virginia Tech.
I have a 3.75 GPA and have gotten A's in courses such as Physics, Biology, Plant taxonomy, and Organic Chemistry. I curently work in a research lab while being a full time student on Apple phenolics. I also currently TA for organic chemistry and love my job. My goal with my learning processes has been to be able to fully understand a subject back to front and then be able to explain that topic to others. I hope I can bring joy to teaching by making it accesible, interesting, and light so that anyone can learn from me.

The way that I like to teach is conversational. I ask my students to come to my class with questions that guide the topics that we work on together. When a student is struggling at a particular topic, I focus on details of the topic and make it digestible one step at a time. I really want to make sure that my students are able to apply the knowledge I teach so I make sure that they can go through the subject and teach me how and why we do certain methods in Organic Chemistry. It is through this role-reversal that I see the most success in my students; the key to understanding Organic is through application and having fun while doing it. I hope to make my students see what fun Organic can be and show them that this subject is for everyone. My tutoring skills are for college-level organic chemistry, first and second semester.
