About Liam
Teaching saxophone provides me with the opportunity to guide students toward technical mastery, musical sensitivity, and creative independence—all while building a foundation for joyful lifelong playing. I begin each lesson by refining those fundamental aspects that make or break a saxophone technique: breath control, embouchure development, posture alignment, hand comfort and dexterity, tonal consistency, and precise articulation. I ensure that students develop a healthy, reliable approach that supports long-term growth. At the same time, I support expressive depth—encouraging students to explore dynamics, vibrato, tone color, and phrasing early on to cultivate their personal sound. Improvisation is not delayed—it is a constant thread: simple scale-based patterns, rhythmic improvisation tasks, and melodic experimentation all foster spontaneity and listening-driven creativity. Music theory and ear training are taught as living tools—discovering chord tones, scale degrees, and melodic intervals directly through improvisation or repertoire, rather than as isolated subjects. I center lessons around the music students choose, from classical sonatas to jazz ballads to modern hits, ensuring relevance and sustained interest. We set achievable targets—like mastering a solo, playing in public, or composing a short improvisation—to keep the learning process structured yet inspiring. One transformative moment I experienced was supporting a student who initially felt intimidated by improvisation through steady guidance and transparent encouragement; they went on to perform a compelling improvised solo live—a shift that marked deeper artistic ownership. My purpose is to help students grow as well-rounded saxophonists—technically sound and expressive—who embrace the full spectrum of what this instrument can offer them as musicians and creators alike.

Teaching saxophone is an ever-evolving conversation between tradition and innovation, and my role as an educator is to help each student find their place in that dialogue. I begin with a strong emphasis on tone—after all, the sound is the soul of the saxophone. We work on breath support, mouthpiece control, embouchure formation, and dynamic range from the start.
Once that foundation is set, we gradually layer in essential technique: scales, arpeggios, articulation styles, and rhythmic precision. But just as important is cultivating musicality. I introduce students to the full spectrum of expression through jazz standards, blues progressions, and modal vamps, guiding them through the art of improvisation with structured exercises and intuitive exploration.
We use transcriptions not just to imitate but to analyze and reinterpret—learning from greats like Cannonball Adderley, Wayne Shorter, and Melissa Aldana. Students practice improvising over chord changes, experiment with phrasing, and even compose their own solos using melodic motifs and rhythmic variation. I also teach harmonic theory in a practical, hands-on way, connecting the circle of fifths and chord extensions to real songs and jam tracks.
We use tools like looper pedals, backing tracks, and digital tuners to make practice more immersive and fun. I create a practice roadmap for each student with clear benchmarks—be it mastering a bebop head, recording a multi-track solo, or preparing for a jazz ensemble audition. One student, originally shy about soloing, now confidently leads their school combo thanks to our focus on ear training, solo structure, and phrasing finesse. My aim is always to inspire confidence, curiosity, and individuality, encouraging students to see the saxophone not just as an instrument but as a vehicle for storytelling and self-expression.
