About Yann

Salut! My name's Yann and I'm currently studying to be a doctor at the University of Manchester. I've been working with children and young people for over 5 years, both as a one-to-one assistant and as a teaching assistant in a secondary school.

I learnt to speak French from my mum, who is from the West of France, and I also did GCSE and A-level French in secondary school. I love to speak French! I also love to teach, and as a tutor you can expect me to bring along a lot of enthusiasm.

As a tutor I draw heavily on my knowledge of psychology to teach people; I have a first-class degree in psychology from the University of York, and as such I have a great appreciation for the different types of learning styles that exist. Further, having worked extensively with children with learning difficulties, I am also trained to support the education of young people with additional educational requirements.

As a tutor, I am a big believer in learning as a shared dialogue, with an emphasis on the teacher as a guide, not a taskmaster. Given all this, you can expect me to be a very versatile, patient and adaptable tutor. Thanks for checking out my bio, let me know if you'd like me to tutor you!

About the lesson

My lessons typically last one hour and are tailored to the needs of each individual student. Whether your goal is to improve your confidence in speaking French, prepare for GCSE or A-level examinations, or strengthen your grammar and vocabulary, every lesson is adapted to your current level and learning objectives.

I believe that the best way to learn a language is through regular exposure and active use, while ensuring lessons remain enjoyable and never overwhelming. Rather than following a rigid formula, I adapt each lesson to the student's strengths and areas for improvement. For example, a student who finds speaking particularly challenging can expect additional conversational practice through role-play, picture descriptions, and guided dialogue, while those preparing for examinations will receive targeted support based on the requirements of their exam board (such as AQA or Edexcel) and the latest specification.

A typical lesson begins with a short warm-up to activate previous knowledge and build confidence, such as rapid-fire translation or conversational questions. The main body of the lesson focuses on developing one or two key skills through a mixture of explanation, guided practice, and independent application, with regular opportunities to speak French throughout. Lessons finish with a brief recap and a useful French phrase or expression to reinforce learning and encourage students to use the language outside the classroom.

For students who enjoy further immersion, I am happy to recommend age-appropriate books, podcasts, films, television programmes, or other French-language resources that complement our lessons and help build confidence beyond the curriculum.
