About Noah

Although I am only now beginning my undergrad study at university, for a long time there has been little doubt as to which subjects I would continue with for the rest of my life. I consider language and linguistics my passion, but I also consider myself very fortunate to have had the opportunity to study such non-mainstream languages as Russian and Arabic from a relatively young age, as this inspired me to explore a very wide range of other languages when many might feel confined to the traditional lineup of French, Spanish, German, and perhaps Latin, thus limiting their understanding of what foreign languages can be like to a small corner of Western Europe. Having read widely on linguistics and published numerous articles on the topic, I feel I have the advantage of being able to explain thoroughly what native speakers, and indeed many learners, might simply describe as ‘the way it happens to be’. More broadly I would consider myself someone who loves to learn (I am also very much interested in literature, the arts, and especially history), and who understands the value of hard work, which secured for me high grades at both GCSE and A-Level.

About the lesson

I offer help to all students from absolute beginners up to A-Level.
Lessons will be 45 minutes and held over Zoom. They are offered as frequently or infrequently as students want, depending on their needs. I am happy to check work and offer corrections, but will also set tasks for students in between lessons, e.g. learn new vocabulary, write an essay / paragraph.
I offer a rigorous and flexible approach to learning backed by a long-standing love of languages and a robust knowledge of linguistics. Having studied both Russian and Arabic up to A-Level, following a previous knowledge of French and many more brief experiences with various other languages, I feel confident in explaining the process of gaining familiarity with a language: which strategies tend to work better than others, which pitfalls to avoid, and how to cater different approaches to different styles of learning. A knowledge of linguistics is also useful in explaining grammar and syntax, and helping with pronunciation. Based on my understanding of the A-Level curriculum and wide exposure to Russian and Middle Eastern culture in the form of literature, cinema, history, and news, I can also offer relevant guidance for the non-linguistic aspect of exams, especially the Literature Paper and Individual Research Project, or simply a better understanding of the part of the world that you have chosen to study.
Although I did not study French A-Level, I am also able to help with it up to GCSE level, where I secured a top grade.
