About Lisamarie

I entered ASU with the intention of receiving a degree that would allow me to teach art at the high school level. As I began taking math classes such as Intro to Algebra, surprisingly, I began to get A's in all of my classes. I struggled with math in high school and expected the same result in college. When I aced a Trigonometry class taken during the summer, my professor took me aside and told me that I should teach math. He thought I had a natural ability with mathematics and advised me that I would be able to get a job faster, as Art teaching jobs are not available in abundance. I went as far as Calculus 2 in college and sure enough, I was hired as a math teacher at the school where I completed my student teaching. I have had students return to me years later saying that I saved them and their math grade. They would often tell me that I made math simple for them. I try not to analyze what I am doing that is different. I continue to teach the way I always have...which seems to bring success for any learner who is struggling in mathematics.

About the lesson

I am an advocate for Incremental Learning when it comes to mathematics. Incremental Learning breaks concepts into small, manageable steps and ensures mastery of foundational skills (e.g., order of operations, solving linear equations) before advancing. A typical lesson plan will consist of a simple formative assessment so I can analyze what you know and where I start in our tutoring session. My lessons involve direct instruction, then "We Do, You Do" problems, followed by "Try These" and a formative assessment that shows me you have mastered the objective. We spiral review until I am satisfied that you can solve problems accurately. I will stay with you for as long as it takes. I believe that most people freeze up with math as early as the introduction to integers (or negative numbers). I have an ability to explain advanced mathematical concepts in simple terms, such that they are understandable. The first step is to realize that you can do this, and to let your guard down. I will use a simple approach where you can see me hand writing equations and steps that I take to solve the problems. I like to go back to the basics, where teaching is simple and effective. I will tutor any level of Algebra and Geometry, from 7th grade to college Algebra and Geometry levels.
