About Robert

I taught formally for 16 years. At five periods per day and 40 students per period, and 16 years, we arrive at approximately 3200 students. This does not include students that I privately tutored. I have found that as my students continued onto high school, they were recognized as having studied math with me. Their teachers told them they were better prepared than many other students and always ready for a challenge. A majority went on to a university education, a rarity in a region where the high school drop out rate is over 50%.

About the lesson

My classes are specifically for the 4th to 9th grade math student. I noticed in my experience that it is generally at this age that students become confused and disinterested in math. In the primary grades, when lessons were concrete, (you can see and feel three apples and add three more), basic math functions are simple and fun. As instruction advances and abstract concepts, such as in Algebra, are introduced, a great deal of confusion arises over the fact that there are calculations for things are not so tangible. I try to personalize my instruction by creating problems wherein the students themselves are mentioned. I also diagram with real world objects, rather than vectors, rays, and once the concept is accepted, we tackle the vocabulary. I infuse a bit of light humor, as most students, adults included, do not like math, and humor lessens the tension.

Details

Student would incur a fee of $10.00 for cancellation with less than 24 hour notice. Some exceptions made for illness and/or injury. If student requires more time without 24 hour notification it will be billed at $8.00 per quarter hour.
