About Mary M
Although I have never served as a tutor, per se, I was a college instructor for eleven years. (albeit, I was teaching counseling!) Through the years, with excellent skills developed in high school, college, and in my job, I believe I have some talents that I might be able to share with students in middle and high school age which could benefit them in their school journey. The first is ENGLISH: I can offer READING COMPREHENSION, as well as helping a student learn to develop an ENJOYMENT of READING (many middle schoolers...and some older kids, just haven't learned that "books are your friends" yet) GRAMMAR: this just doesn't seem to be taught much in school anymore, yet a college student and job applicant is expected to speak grammatically correct and write in the same manner. WRITING AN ESSAY, A LETTER, A RESUME, A MAJOR RESEARCH PAPER: You would not believe the college sophomore who are unable to write a simple essay answer to a question on a test. Nor would you believe how many kids graduate from high school who cannot write a cover letter and a resume, let alone be able to write the first real research paper they are asked to write in their college English class! I CAN TEACH THEM TO DO ALL THAT. When they are given twelve reading assignments the first week of classes in college, they will only panic a little bit because I will help them to LOVE READING AND LEARNING!! AREA of EXPERTISE NUMBER TWO: HISTORY. Having a family that is dredged in history has made me hungry to learn more about myself, my country, the places from which I came. Since being a young child I devoured books on American History and European History. I am no "Historian" per se, but I know a lot about "a lot.' And what I don't know, I know where to find out. I think in order to get kids and people of all ages interested in the past is to give them "The rest of the story..." Students are like sponges and if you have a good story about history to tell...They'll learn. They'll remember.

I have a liberal Arts degree from Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pa. I originally started out to become an English teacher, but this was during a time when there was a glut of teachers, so I switched my major to Psychology and ended up working with Drug addicts and Mental Health afflicted individuals for the next 25 years. I did end up teaching college at Pennsylvania College of Technology for 11 years where I taught Basic Counseling skills, Addiction: Management and Treatment, and Group Therapy. I am a prolific reader and my job as a counselor and program director honed writing skills, in addition, my instructor position, put those much-needed grammar and writing skills needed in college level essay papers, and for lengthy answers to test questions to the fore. These are things which I can convey to students I tutor to a less extent in my middle school students, more so in high school students. SO MANY kids are unprepared to write on a college level when they graduate high school! As I mentioned previously, I am a voracious reader, especially, English Literature as well as any kind of American or European Historical Non-Fiction or Biography I can get my hands on. I proudly say that I warped my children by NOT telling them fairy tales but telling them about history instead. In the case of my older daughter, she chose to go into teaching European History and I'm proud to say I believe I pointed her in that direction early on! I like to make history exciting for kids by giving them the "back stories" of historical events in order to peak their interests!
