Over the 10 years, I have provided guidance and assistance to a vast amount of students as they embarked on their chemistry studies and pursued their educational goals. I am of the firm belief that every student, regardless of their present standing, has the potential to excel and stand out as one of the top performers in their class, their year, or even in the entire state. With a commitment to fully engaging with the learning process and taking advantage of the opportunities available, any student can expect a significant shift in their outlook, performance, and results. Academic achievements.... * Four-year B.Sc. Honors degree in Chemistry from University of Colombo * Top GRE Chemistry scorer * High distinction winner for Australian Chemistry Olympiad * M.Sc. in Materials Chemistry from NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology - Norway's best university for Nanotechnology and Chemistry * Norwegian master's scholarship holder for overseas students * Australian ARC Linkage scholarship holder * Australian HDR scholarship holder for postgraduate studies * Currently reading for the Ph.D. at QUT (Queensland University of Technology) in Nanotechnology Tutoring experience.... Guiding high school and college students in: Organic, organometallic, Inorganic, physical, general, analytical, Chemistry/ Nanotechnology/ Chemical kinetics/ Catalysis. Theoretical guidance and exam preparation in chemistry for *Australian chemistry curricula (WA, VIC, QLD, NSW) *A vast amount of college students from QUT, UQ, USYD, UNSW, ANU, UWA, Monash, Deakin, UTS, Griffith, LaTrobe, UniMelb, and RMIT. Further many overseas college students from USA, India, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Canada. *Edexcel/CIE AL, IAL, IGCSE, GCSE *GCE A/L (Sri Lanka) *GRE Chemistry *MCAT Organic and General chemistry *Supervision and guidance for undergraduate and master's level students in theoretical and experimental chemistry, including thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, chemical calculations, general and organic chemistry. Grading lab reports, preparation of test solutions, conducting trial experiments, and exam invigilation. I understand that your primary objective in seeking assistance is to fulfill your individual aspirations, or those of your child, who is navigating high school/university studies and preparing for chemistry exams. Your ultimate goal is to reach your full potential, attain excellent grades, and pave the way to achieving the desired academic path, leading to your preferred university course, and I'm here to make it a reality. A glimpse of my tutoring strategies, *A writing pad is used to conduct lessons, to give a proper classroom experience *Students will have access to Illustrations, Questions, examples, and explanations from many standard chemistry textbooks *Tests and worksheets based on each unit *Continuous evaluation and motivation *Experience the benefits of a modern, technology-based delivery of education over the traditional education techniques. *Lessons can be recorded for further or future references *Pre-Recorded video lessons, explanations, and reviews can be uploaded for questions and theory upon the requests. A multimedia educational approach for chemical experiments and demonstrations. For the students who prefer to understand chemistry, not to byheart. Complex and difficult theoretical topics will be made extremely easy to understand by methodical and simple explanations. And, I'm cleared to work with children in QLD until 14-03-2027 (details available on request)

Find out more about Asanga

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I developed a keen interest in private tutoring soon after completing high school. It was around that time that I began my journey as a tutor, which has now spanned over a decade.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

The subject I specialize in is chemistry, catering to high school, graduate, and postgraduate students. Chemistry, often referred to as the central science, encompasses a vast range of topics that explain the phenomena we observe in the physical world. Personally, I find great fascination in nanotechnology, particularly advanced 2D nanomaterials for future battery technologies, which is the focus of my Ph.D. studies. I enjoy discussing these cutting-edge advancements with my students.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

One teacher who has served as a significant inspiration and role model for me is Richard Feynman. His remarkable ability to break down complex scientific theories and present them in a simpler and more accessible manner resonates deeply with me. I strive to emulate his teaching style by making difficult concepts easier to understand.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

The qualities that I believe are crucial for being a good tutor include possessing extensive knowledge in the subject matter, being an attentive listener to identify gaps in students' understanding, and having excellent communication skills to effectively deliver lessons. Additionally, a tutor should be kind and compassionate towards their students to create a supportive learning environment.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One valuable anecdote that relates to the subject of chemistry is the quote by Richard Feynman, "I'm a universe of atoms, an atom in the universe." This quote encapsulates the profound depth of scientific knowledge and the limitless potential it holds.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

During my time as a high school student, I encountered challenges in understanding certain aspects of organic chemistry, which often required rote memorization. However, I overcame these difficulties by adopting a chronicle approach that focused on understanding the underlying concepts rather than relying solely on memorization.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion lies in the field of science. I derive great satisfaction from the process of discovery, invention, and research. Moreover, I am deeply interested in promoting sustainable practices within the scientific community to contribute to a better future.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions)?

My genuine enjoyment of witnessing the moment when a student grasps a challenging concept with the help of my knowledge and guidance. The sense of fulfillment and accomplishment that comes from being a catalyst in their learning journey is what makes me truly dedicated and committed as a tutor.
