About Alex

I'm currently working on a PhD in English Literature at the University of Nottingham, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). I'm working on the intersection of literature and politics, specifically looking at British writing from the 1970s and '80s. Before that, I was awarded the best mark of my cohort for my Masters in Contemporary Literature and Culture at Birkbeck College, University of London. My dissertation - on 21st Century novels depicting the experience of rural, working-class America - was awarded a Distinction. My own writing has been published internationally, and I've written funding bids which have won arts funding from the Arts Council and the European Union. Outside of my academic life, until recently I worked as a Projects Director for a small digital business in London. There I wrote proposals, ran workshops, and managed a team of around 10 people. The skills I learned there are instrumental in the way I teach: I've been used to helping colleagues turn their ideas into fully-formed arguments, and have always had a knack for explaining complicated ideas in straightforward language.

About the lesson

Do you know what you want to say, but aren't sure how to say it? Are you struggling to get your ideas across in the right way for your situation, whether it's a university essay or funding application? Do you need help capturing the reader's attention, and holding it until you've gotten your point across? Whether this is an academic setting, an application for funding, or a project proposal: the fundamental principles of good writing are the same. I'll help you to get into the right mindset by thinking about writing for a specific reader, and getting you to think about the core of the story you're trying to tell. I'll meet you wherever you are at assisting whatever stage of the journey you're on for as long as you need, whether you just need a critical eye doing the final write-up and proofing or whether you want my help designing research and structure. I tend to meet students for an hour at a time, but my hourly rate can just as easily be applied to proof-reading and critical editing - I'm keen to be as flexible and efficient within the budget you have.

Knowledgeable, intuitive, and empathetic, just talking to him about my project rekindled my drive and refocused my efforts. After discussing ideas and structure I was able to go off and finish a draft, which he later went over with a fine-tooth comb, catching not only my typos but also tightening and improving the flow of my prose while interrogating my ideas.
