About Oliver

Hi, my name is Oliver and I am 24 years old - I graduated from University in 2022 with a first class degree in Engineering and I did Maths, English and Physics at A-level. I have 5 years experience tutoring with a wide range of students. I consider myself a very patient teacher, and I enjoy the challenge of finding different ways to explain complicated topics to students whose brains might not work in the exact same way as my own. I think the creation of a personal, semi-informal and friendly relationship with my students is so important - my goal is to instil the confidence in my students to ask me the questions they might not ask in front of their whole class - only this way can they get the most out of our time together.

The benefits of one-to-one tutoring are immediately obvious, both to the student, their parents and their teachers. Over my four years of tutoring I have racked up hundreds if not thousands of hours of tutoring and I have learnt to adapt my teaching to each student's individual needs - accumulating a vast range of teaching tools and techniques that simply aren’t available to (or practical for) teachers dealing with large classes. I have 5 years of tutoring experience and a wide range of previous tutees, from as young as 11 all the way up to A-level. I specialise in Maths, Physics and English at A-level, but at GCSE level I am experienced in tutoring most core subjects, excluding languages. At 13+ and below I am proficient in tutoring all subjects. I also have experience with specific entrance and scholarship exams to secondary school, as I have previously helped a student with a successful Winchester scholarship application into year 9 and I myself was awarded an academic scholarship to my senior school. Aside from specific subjects, I also consider myself to be somewhat of an expert in exam technique, and have previously helped students who struggle to perform at their best under exam conditions. Over Covid I made the switch to online tutoring, and haven’t looked back since. Whilst there are obvious benefits of in-person learning, online calling software have actually opened up my tutoring to far more online tools and learning opportunities. Moreover, I have actually found that the protection of being ‘behind a screen’ can actually help my tutees open up faster, and facilitate the creation of the personal, informal relationship that allows for the trust needed to teach effectively, and gives students the confidence to admit when they don’t understand and to ask the questions they need to ask, the questions they might not ask in front of their school class. I have recently invested in a top of the range ‘Wacom Tablet’ which allows me to naturally and fluently communicate with students on a screen better than I could have ever hoped in person, allowing me to directly draw on the screen in front of them as if it were a whiteboard, and even highlight easily as we read together.
