About Orla

I moved to China with my family when I was 10 and ended up staying until I was 19. We lived in Beijing and Shanghai, and had the chance to travel to some of the world’s most wonderful places. China is not somewhere that can ever be entirely known, nor fully understood. I think because of this, it is rare to find people that want to understand China and its vast place in the world, despite the growing importance of this very understanding. My aim here is to help develop this interest and hopefully encourage younger students to find their own interests in China and Mandarin. I want to help make this vast area of study more accessible, whether that be through improving your ability to write in Mandarin, or discussing what you think of, for example, the ‘Century of Humiliation’ or the ‘iron rice bowl’. For those studying China more generally, I can provide in-depth and niche reading lists and suggestions, provide access to various academic journals, and provide recommendations on Chinese fiction to help better your understanding of the language. I have ten years of both academic and colloquial resources behind me, as well as my own struggles with learning Mandarin and attempting to piece together an understanding of China, so my empathy with you as a learner will always come first!

About the lesson

- Having grown up in China, a lot of my ability to communicate comes from having to communicate for my family in a wide range of situations from getting toilets fixed to sorting out medical treatment and organising international movers during a pandemic. I emphasise learning Mandarin from ‘real life’ sources (news reports and newspapers, Mandarin language podcasts, Mandarin non-fiction and fiction works etc.) in order to get a feel of how the language is realistically used and to provide the student with the confidence to operate in Mandarin-speaking countries. - Having sat my IGCSE, IB, and undergraduate degree, I am able to cover most generic topics, but like to also bring in history, politics, geography, sociology and culture to help form an understanding of where the language comes from and how/why it works in the way it does. - I would suggest, depending on the student’s level of Mandarin, an hour per session. My teaching is aimed at students 12+. There is no need for any prior knowledge of the language; just a keen interest! - I have informally taught Mandarin to IGCSE and IB students, and have experience leading groups of Chinese schoolchildren on excursions in the UK. I also have English language teaching experience in the UK and Romania.
