About Steve
I am a qualified and experienced (and friendly) Mathematics teacher and private tutor from the UK, having taught in schools for a decade, and tutored for even longer.
After spending ten years happily immersed in Mathematics teaching and private tuition back in Surrey, my wife and I chose to emigrate to South-West France back in 2004 to start a whole new life. It has been the most extraordinary adventure, and we are now fully integrated into French life and have become almost fluent French speakers. But I have started to miss the algebraic and numeric world – the time is now right to put on my still-fitting teacher’s hat, and help students once again to achieve the best grades that they can, in the subject which has always been close to my heart.

After ten years' experience in classrooms, the one thing I came to appreciate most was that, in Maths, an approach of "one size fits all" does not work. It can be a peculiar subject - an explanation of a particular topic or method can be as clear as day to one student, and hopelessly impenetrable to another. And so I've always tried to adopt a whole range of ways to explain a theme where necessary.
Maths should always be fun and relevant (as much as any school subject can be...) and I once demonstrated this to my A-Level Statistics class when I spent a lesson proving that it was statistically significant that I only had one red and one black fruit pastille in my morning packet (all the rest were yellow, green and orange) and that I should therefore write to complain to the makers. These things matter.
On slightly more serious subjects, teaching things like percentages can either be done in the dry fashion of endless calculations, or can be related to real-life stuff which the student can relate to. Such as "how much is my first car going to cost me."
I have always maintained that "Maths is half competence, half confidence, and half enjoyment."
I can offer lessons (or other types of help) in a variety of ways online. Zoom, Microsoft Teams or Skype for example. I have a camera trained on a whiteboard, but I also use a graphics tablet if that suits the student better. The student is completely at liberty to turn off their own webcam if they feel more at ease that way. They can scan and email their work to me, or better still train a camera on their work for immediate feedback. I'm pretty flexible, and can go with whatever works best for them.
It can even be just offline help, such as marking their work or practice exam papers, and giving full and detailed feedback and comments on it.
Whether you are looking for a tutor for the whole school year, some extra help in the period leading up to exams (or “cramming”), occasional help when tricky topics arise, or even homework assistance – I’m happy to help on whatever basis you might need.
