About Jonathan
If your motivation is simply to gain more confidence and fluency in French or Spanish, I will work out how best to support you and develop your abilities. Language learning works best in a relaxed, fun and supportive environment with plenty of praise and encouragement. I want you to feel comfortable speaking in the target language, but I won’t force this on you and I’ll explain grammatical concepts in English. I am very thorough in my preparation and I will track your progress from lesson to lesson. I will set you tasks to complete as required and you’ll get precise feedback. For school students, I believe it’s important to work on all 4 skills (speaking, reading, listening, writing), but the particular focus on each will depend on your goals. My materials complement those used in schools up to GCSE and A level. For post-A-level students, I have a range of university-level courses which can be shaped to your needs. Oxbridge admissions preparation will include not only advice on writing UCAS personal statements, but also behind-the-scenes insight into how the interview process really operates, and mock interview practice. Ultimately, languages are more than just communication: it’s about delving into other ways of living, through understanding the cultures and pasts that underpin life in Francophone and Hispanic countries today. My goal is to give you a flavour of all this. For advanced students, I can take you back as far as the sixteenth century – I’ll show you how to read early modern French books if you’re really curious…

Perfect! I have been taking French lessons with Jonathan, and have been really enjoying them so far. Le Prof is a very experienced and accomplished teacher, and he took time to understand my level, my goals, and how I like to study, and he uses these to prepare lessons that are focussed and enjoyable, and that are well delivered. He also has a huge amount of knowledge on French, France, history, culture etc etc, and I could happily go on tangents all lesson. I would definitely recommend Jonathan to French students of all levels.
- James and I had a great first lesson! He is very motivated and an experienced language learner, having previously learnt Chinese. We will be working to improve on pronunciation and grammar, as well as diving into the Mr Men in French to work on reading skills.See the response Jonathan :

- We had a positive introductory session today and have mapped out a programme of study.See the response Jonathan :
Perfect! I found Jonathan through the Superproof website when I was a complete beginner in French. He’s an excellent tutor who adapts his teaching style to suit your individual learning needs and goals. He comes well prepared to every lesson and always sends helpful materials and homework afterwards.
We’re currently working methodically through a French textbook, and I’m amazed by how much I’ve learned — and how quickly I’m progressing.View more reviews

Highly recommend for anyone wanting to improve their French!A superb language teacher with whom I had the pleasure of working at the University of Oxford.
I was Jonathan's close colleague for several years as a university tutor of French and recommend him wholeheartedly as an excellent teacher. Alongside being hugely knowledgeable and passionate about sharing a love of language, literature, and culture with others, he is meticulous, dedicated, ambitious, patient, and focuses on empowering and supporting each individual to give of their best. Combining both rigour and kindness, he is an exemplary tutor.
