About Rachael

I believe learning should be about more than getting the right answer. It is about developing skills, curiosity, confidence and the ability to keep going when something is challenging. I want children to feel supported when something is difficult, proud of their progress and excited about what they can achieve. One of the most rewarding parts of tutoring is seeing a child's confidence grow as they realize, "I can do this". And that is something I have recently experienced as I wrote and then published my first novel - a lifelong dream. I am also developing my own online business, using skills I have gained in various positions and life experience over the years, including teaching, and am enjoying learning new skills and the challenges that brings.

About the lesson

I believe children learn best when they feel supported, understood and appropriately challenged. I tailor lessons to each child's needs, using clear explanations, questioning, discussion, guided practice and activities that make learning engaging. My focus is on building understanding, confidence and independence, while providing extra support or extension where needed. I offer 20, 40 and 60-minute lessons, depending on the child's age, needs and concentration span. Younger children may benefit from shorter, focused sessions, while older children may benefit from longer lessons. We can discuss the most appropriate option during a free 20-minute consultation. I have a Bachelor of Teaching and Learning (Primary) from University of Canterbury and three years of experience in New Zealand primary schools. I bring classroom teaching experience to my teaching, with an understanding that children learn at different rates and may need either additional support or greater challenge. I am also a former tutor teacher for the Ministry of Education. My lessons are for primary-aged children, approximately 5-12 years old, throughout New Zealand. I work with children who are struggling with particular areas, need to strengthen their skills or confidence, are coasting and need greater engagement, or are ready for extension and additional challenge. Lessons are personalized to each child. I am based in the Nelson-Tasman area.

My rates reflect personalized tutoring tailored to each child's needs. Lessons are available in 30, 45 and 60-minute sessions - details available upon application, with packages available and first lesson discount. A free 20-minute consultation is available before starting, so we can discuss your child's needs and whether my tutoring is the right fit.
