About Marco

I attended a linguistic high school in Italy and never missed a chance to study a foreign language since then. During my University studies, I used to provide with private tuition to help young students with their homework, and the subjects usually included English, Italian and Latin.
Shortly after graduating with a Master degree in International Relations in 2010, I was among the winners of a programme, organised by the Italian Foreign Office, to work as an intern at the Italian Institute of Culture of Pretoria, the cultural office of the Italian Embassy in South Africa.
Among my responsibilities, I organised, promoted and delivered a basic course of Italian to a small group of South African students who wanted to attend a study programme in Italy.

To motivate my students to learn English, I need to make sure they enjoy their English classes and are interested in the topic
Using authentic materials for teaching purposes gives students the opportunity to have a direct experience of the real, live language as well as to learn some of the socio-cultural aspects contained in the language itself.
As they will be using the same resources as native speakers do, students are likely to feel more motivated to progress further in the study of the language.
To improve their listening skills, the students could listen to a song, that had been previously selected, and fill the gaps of the lyrics in their worksheets.
Role plays is another good way for students to immerse themselves in the context and practice their speaking skills.
As a teacher, I’d definitely encourage my students to work in pairs or teams and use the English language as much as possible.
In my teaching experience, I feel quite comfortable with the teaching method called PPP, presentation, practice and production, because it is relatively easy to follow.
An ideal extra-curricular activity, suitable for young students, is treasure hunt.
Divided in small teams, each participant receives a map with some hints in English that will lead them closer to the solution of the game.
The solution could be in the form of a sentence that the students should be able to make up by putting together the different clues they gather along the hunt.
An alternative activity could be organising a football or volleyball match, provided that the players only speak English among them.
I’d definitely bring with me some flashcards, because they represent a valid plan B to keep the students busy, and a small ball, that might work well as an icebreaker, along with many markers, pens and pencils.
