About Tom
I am a qualified high school English teacher. I taught for three and half years in the UK before moving to Australia, where I taught in a prestigious girls’ high school for two years. I have HSC experience, and have experience teaching Standard, Advanced and EAL/D English at Stage 6.

I place a strong emphasis on metacognition so that tutees not only learn key content, but learn about learning as a process.
I am a firm believer in the importance of providing a balance of both knowledge and skills - skills are extremely important, and one of my core aims is to establish skills that are transferable, but in order to transfer skills, a solid knowledge base must first be in place. I tailor lessons to the needs of the tutee using a personalised diagnostic approach to determine which skills and knowledge require attention.
I also consider the preferences and needs of the individual. Some students prefer to discover things more independently with the tutor acting more as a guide during this process, whereas others prefer more direct instruction. I design sessions based around either preference.
