About Abigail

Hello! I am a Spanish tutor with over 4 years of experience teaching more than 200 students at all levels, from those just beginning their Spanish journey through to A-Level students and adult learners seeking conversational fluency. Spanish is a language I love deeply — for its musicality, for the richness of the cultural worlds it opens up, and for the extraordinary range of contexts in which knowing it is practically useful — and I bring that love into every lesson. I am experienced with GCSE and A-Level Spanish across all major UK exam boards, and I prepare students for all components of these qualifications with thoroughness and precision. I am also experienced teaching Spanish for communicative purposes — business Spanish, travel Spanish, conversational Spanish — and I tailor my teaching completely to the specific goals of each student rather than applying a one-size-fits-all curriculum. My students consistently achieve strong results in their Spanish examinations, but what I am most proud of is the number who have gone on to use Spanish actively and with genuine confidence in their lives — traveling to Spanish-speaking countries, taking on jobs that require Spanish, pursuing Spanish-language media and literature — long after their examination goals have been achieved. Building the foundation for that kind of ongoing relationship with the language is something I try to do with every student I work with.

About the lesson

I teach Spanish from the conviction that language learning is most effective when it is communicative from the very beginning — when students are using the language to express real ideas and understand real meaning rather than simply completing grammar exercises in the abstract. Grammar is important and I teach it carefully, but always in the context of communication: I introduce a new tense by showing how it allows students to express something they previously could not express, and then I practise it through speaking and writing exercises that require students to use it meaningfully.For exam students, I cover all the skills assessed in the relevant qualification: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. I have detailed knowledge of GCSE and A-Level Spanish specifications across all major exam boards and I design my teaching and practice around the specific demands of each. Written exam preparation includes vocabulary building through thematic study of the required topic areas, grammar consolidation, and extensive practice with past paper questions including the essay component at A-Level.For conversation preparation — the speaking examination and the productive skill more broadly — I develop fluency, spontaneity, and the ability to handle unexpected questions without falling back on memorised scripts. I also teach students to extend their answers with opinions, justifications, and hypothetical reasoning, which is what distinguishes genuinely good speaking examination performances from merely adequate ones.
