About Holly

I have a passion for languages and have travelled around France, living in Paris for a year working as a language teaching assistant in a primary school. I am a recent graduate of French from the University of Leeds and have recently completed my Teacher Training course at Leeds Beckett University, achieving a PGCE and Qualified Teacher Status. I was commended for my language teaching skills in the schools I was placed in, with notable comments such as "Her subject knowledge around the teaching of Modern Foreign Languages is exemplary", and "Holly's teaching and subject knowledge in Modern Foreign Languages is a real strength and I hope is the area she takes forward in her teaching career." I am really enthusiastic about helping other students gain an interest in languages as I have seen how many doors it can open through my own personal experience. Having struggled with learning languages myself in school, I understand how difficult it can be. My lessons will be tailored to the student's strengths and areas for improvement, with inspiration from ways that helped me learn, and that I have practised in the classroom with success.

About the lesson

My approach is completely based on personalisation. I firmly believe that everyone can learn languages, having seen a radical improvement in my language abilities through personal tutoring and hard work in my own time.

Free initial meeting - an informal phone call or video call where we can discuss scheduling, how you would like the sessions to take place, what you might like to work on and any further questions you may have. In the first of my tutoring sessions, I make a start on your language journey based on our prior discussion. I will use different methods to harness your strengths and develop all different language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing). Depending on personal aspirations - whether it's preparing for an exam or just wanting to have better conversational skills - I incorporate various language-learning tools to help you strive.

I encourage students to be proactive in their learning of languages, with emphasis on speaking and listening abilities. Vocabulary and grammar are vital aspects of language learning. Learning these aspects can have a reputation for being monotonous and repetitive, however, I make sure this is a fun and interactive part of the lesson for my students, so they don't get the sense of dread when the word 'grammar' is mentioned! (Trust me, this comes from personal experience!)

Having been a language learner myself, I understand the language learning process, especially when it involves speaking! I have a warm and gentle nature, which enables people to be more comfortable and open when practising. I emphasise that I am NOT here to test you. Instead, I am here to see your potential and help you become the best linguist you can be! I use various activities to keep you engaged and integrate cultural aspects to make it more meaningful.

I know what it takes to be a good language teacher. Having spent years attending lessons in language schools, observing language teaching in the classroom, and putting these into practice myself, I can incorporate effective techniques into my sessions to improve the student's confidence and proficiency. I will set at-home tasks between lessons which I encourage students to do, as it helps bridge their understanding and solidify their knowledge, making language learning an easier hill to climb.

Holly taught fun, engaging MFL lessons, where the children learnt vocabulary and fluency without even realising! Holly has been an excellent French tutor to me for nearly a year now. She's patient, fun to talk to and knows loads about French culture having lived and taught there for a year (you should definitely ask her for her favourite café recommendations in Paris!).

I had a real language block which Holly helped me overcome. Learning with her it feels like the language starts to naturally get absorbed into your brain. Within a few months I was dreaming in it.

She is more than suitable for working with children. I saw here working in my school as an English and she was very nice with the children. She adapted her spoken English so that the children were able to understand her. She was also helpful with pupils with special needs. She was patient with them and she was very supportive and she never forgot to give them positive feddbacks.
