About Tom

I'm an ACCA-qualified accountant with a BSc in Mathematics from the University of Birmingham and I've spent the last ten years in senior finance roles: Business Partner in Financial Services, Financial Controller at a FinTech, Head of Finance for a private-equity-backed property group in London and most recently Fractional Finance Director and Global Head of Finance for an international media group operating across the UK, US and Netherlands, where I built the finance function from start-up to $25m of revenue and led the finance side of 8 acquisitions.

Alongside that I founded, grew and recently sold my own accounting practice, which looked after owner-managed businesses across the UK, so I've seen the full range of real sets of accounts, from sole traders to multi-entity groups.

That matters for your exams because almost everything in the ACCA, AAT and CIMA syllabus is something I've done for real: consolidations across ten entities and three currencies, transfer pricing, revenue recognition, budgeting and variance analysis, treasury and covenant management, investment appraisal, management accounts and board packs. When a topic feels abstract, I can show you the version of it that turns up on a Tuesday afternoon in a finance department, which is usually the moment it makes sense. I've recruited and trained finance teams and I've guided trainees through their professional exams along the way.

With a maths degree and A-levels in Maths, Economics and Physics, I can also tutor GCSE and A-level Maths and Economics, and I'm comfortable with the quantitative side of finance exams that many students find hardest. For adults and career-changers, I can help with Excel modelling, Xero, management accounting and the practical skills employers actually test for.

I can be structured or flexible depending on your preferred style but I'll always be patient and pragmatic regardless: we can set a plan for your exam date, work through past papers and fix the specific things costing you marks. Or go through tricky or complex areas you might be stuck on. Your first lesson is free, so you can see how I work before committing.

About the lesson

I tutor students working towards ACCA, AAT and CIMA qualifications, and A-level and university students studying accounting, finance or business. Whether you're stuck on double entry, drowning in consolidation adjustments, or can't make management accounting variances click, I'll explain it the way it's used in a real finance department rather than the way the textbook does, which is usually what makes it stick.

Lessons are built around you: we start with where you are, the exam or deadline you're facing, and the topics that are costing you marks, then work through past questions together until you can do them under time pressure. I'm also happy to help with practical skills employers look for, such as Excel modelling, management accounts, cash-flow forecasting and reading a set of accounts, for anyone starting a finance career or running their own business.

Online via video call with a shared screen, or in person in and around Newbury. Evenings and weekends available, and I can usually fit in a session at short notice before an exam.
