About Kelvin

Have a Bachelor of Science (Statistics), Business (Economics) & am studying a Master's of Applied AI. I have been working professionally as a data engineer, data scientist, and machine learning engineer. I love utilizing the cloud and have a broad skill set ranging across Python, AWS, Azure, Docker, SQL, Git, and even edge ML deployments.

About the lesson

I base all of my sessions around the student's needs - all the way from rushing to understand key concepts for an assignment due the next day to very detailed sessions running from key (often overlooked) fundamentals through to advanced topics. I'm a big advocate of trying to use best practices when coding to ensure minimal bugs and maximum reusability. As we run through examples, I will always explain what's happening under the hood for deeper understanding - as Python has lots of interesting syntax features (like generators, context managers, etc.)

Can you tell us about your first experience using a computer?
My first experiences were playing the default games (Hearts, Minesweeper, Solitaire, etc.) as a small child on Windows 98. It's been really great to see the evolution to where we have beautiful smooth interfaces, advanced IDEs to augment our coding experience and almost limitless compute power available with the cloud.
What is the technological evolution that has marked you most and what will be, in your eyes, a turning point in this field?
Containerisation. Deploying applications in the cloud has never been easier with great tools like Docker.
Explain your expertise, your interest in it and, more broadly, its importance in the computer world.
My passion and expertise lies at the intersection of Python and data. Everything from ingesting, and transforming billions of rows of data (Data Engineering), exploring and visualising it (Data Science), and modelling it (Machine Learning).
Do so-called 'visionaries', such as Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg inspire you or do you have other role models?
They do not. I prefer to focus on creating systems and habits for myself to improve a little bit each day. Small improvements compounded over time make a huge difference.
What would you say to an uncomfortable person in front of a screen who says that "IT is too complicated"?
It is complicated! Which is why you need to constantly be trying to reduce problems down into small elements which are simple and easy. Then write modular code to solve each of those smaller chunks and link them together - all of a sudden you end up with a beautiful script (or set of scripts) which solve(s) your complex problem.
What are your other passions, related or non-related to computers?
Keeping active is really important to me. Both structured training in the gym and just getting outdoors in nature to de-stress and reset.
