About Yann
Hi! I’m Yann, a medical student at the University of Manchester with over 5 years of experience working with children and young people, including as a secondary school teaching assistant and one-to-one support assistant.
I tutor Maths and Science and particularly enjoy helping students make sense of topics they initially find difficult. I aim to break complicated ideas down into simple, manageable steps and build students’ confidence alongside their subject knowledge.
I also have a first-class degree in Psychology from the University of York, giving me a strong understanding of how people learn and why different students benefit from different approaches. I adapt my lessons to the individual student rather than expecting everyone to learn in the same way.
I have extensive experience supporting young people with learning difficulties and additional educational needs, so you can expect me to be patient, encouraging and adaptable.
Most importantly, I want students to feel comfortable asking questions and getting things wrong. I see tutoring as a shared conversation where my role is to guide students towards finding answers for themselves and becoming more confident, independent learners.

We’ll generally start by introducing a new concept in plain English, making sure you understand what it actually means before worrying about complicated terminology or exam questions. We’ll then work through some examples together, with lots of guidance at first before gradually giving you more room to solve problems independently.
If you’re finding something easy, we’ll move on to more challenging questions that require you to apply your knowledge in unfamiliar situations. If you’re finding something difficult, that’s completely fine. We’ll slow things down, break the problem into smaller steps and try approaching it in a different way before building the difficulty back up.
Throughout the lesson, I’ll ask you questions to check your understanding rather than simply showing you how to get the right answer. In Maths and Science, I think it’s really important to understand why something works, not just memorise a method.
At the end of each lesson, we’ll have a quick chat about what you found easy and what you found difficult. I’ll use this to plan our next lesson, so we can spend more time on the areas where you need the most support. We’ll also regularly return to previous topics so that what you learn sticks rather than disappearing after one lesson!
If you’re preparing for exams, we’ll use questions relevant to your course and exam board to identify any gaps in your knowledge. We’ll work through past-paper style questions and build your confidence with problem-solving, showing your working, interpreting questions and exam technique.
Above all, it’s completely normal to find some areas of Maths and Science harder than others. Getting something wrong is often one of the best ways to learn. My aim is to create lessons where you feel comfortable asking questions, having a go and gradually becoming confident enough to tackle difficult problems independently.
