About Damien
Photography is the best thing ever, and it’s all I’ve ever done. I began to learn the trade at college and through assisting fashion and product photographers, then I went to sea for three years of social photography (all on film!) travelling around the world on cruise ships. I was lucky enough to spend 16 years working at the weekly magazine Amateur Photographer – a magazine I became editor of. I got to know all brands of cameras, lenses and accessories inside out, and was able to interview a host of famous professionals and learn about their techniques too. When I started all the cameras we reviewed shot film, but when I finished the world had switched to digital photography - so I’m well versed in both. Through the magazine I created three diploma courses tackling different aspects of photography, and every week we wrote and produced articles on technique and technical issues, as well as pieces dealing with art and visualisation. Eventually I went freelance, which allowed me to continue doing the things I love. I still write reviews, interviews and opinion pieces for photography magazines and websites. I also work for camera and accessory manufacturers, am a commercial photographer for businesses, and I give talks, lectures and workshops on photography. I’ve taught adults on a one-to-one basis as well as in groups, and I’ve recently devised and delivered a series of practical lessons for secondary school pupils. I’ve judged numerous national and international competitions, including the Sony World Photography Awards, Landscape Photographer of the Year, Amateur Photographer of the Year, British Photographer of the Year and the Hasselblad Masters. I’ve written and illustrated articles on photography and equipment for British Journal of Photography, DP Review, Royal Photographic Society magazine, The Saturday Times and many others in the UK and abroad.

My lessons are always based around your wants, needs and problems, so I spend time asking questions and finding out what you would like to get out of our time. If you are working towards an exam then obviously we’ll concentrate on what you need to know and achieve to get the best mark, but if you are taking pictures for fun or a personal project we can concentrate on the aspects you enjoy most. Either way, our conversations, exercises and practical demonstrations will move your photography forward in a dramatic way. You will gain a better understanding of how to express yourself through the medium and how to make the camera produce the images that are in your head. I will explain technical concepts using straightforward language so you can’t help but understand, and I’ll show you techniques that will move your image-making into a new realm. I’m happy to teach all ages, and photographers with 50 years’ experience or none at all. You’ll get homework if you want it and our lessons can be an hour or as long as you like. I’ve been writing about and demonstrating photography and photography technique for almost thirty years, I teach individuals and groups, lecture photographic societies and explain camera features and functions for camera and photographic accessory manufacturers. Most lessons will be online, but I’m also happy to meet in person for practical sessions where possible. And, importantly, we'll have a lot of fun while we do it

Superb photographer
Thank you Damien!I participated in one of Damien’s London street photography workshops. Communication from Damien for the day was clear and timely. On the workshop he took time to find out what we were hoping to get from the day, shared lots of very useful tips as the day progressed and ended the session with a very useful image debrief before we parted. He has a vast experience of all things photography and a keenness to share his knowledge in a very accessible practical way. I would recommend him highly!
I attended a “Street Photography “ presentation by Damien, organised by my local camera shop. It was pitched just right and fired my imagination so that this has become my favourite genre. Damien changed my whole outlook on equipment and challenged long held prejudices. downsized to the M43 format which has transformed my photography. I now fit all my gear in one small bag and consequently take many more photos. I guess that is the whole point really!
I have been on a number of courses with Damien and fully recommend that everyone will be confident that they receive excellent value for money. Damien takes his time with all students both individually and as a group to give the best street experience. I learned firsthand about the effects of light and shade on my photography. He exudes friendly professionalism at all times.
I have known Damien since 2021. During that time Damien has had a positive impact on my journey as a photographer. His support, and expertise have significantly elevated my skills and deepened my understanding of photography.
Damien gave Lowestoft Photographic Club a very informative and entertaining presentation on street photography in December 2024. Club members thought the evening event was presented by a very capable professional presenter and photographer.
I spent a day with Damien on a Panasonic LUMIX organised Street Photography event.
Damien explained his experience and approach to street photography, the range of equipment and then out into the streets for practical work.
His advice and methods helped in getting great images plus the confidence to get amongst people and take the shot.
A great day 5 experience.I’ve attended several events that Damien has run, both online and in person, teaching photography & also camera know how. I’ve also heard him speak at camera clubs. He is a great teacher, willing to spend time making sure you’ve understood what’s being discussed. He has an extensive knowledge of all aspects of photography and is generous in sharing his skills. Damien is a good communicator with a sense of humour, which makes learning a pleasure.
I’ve been on several workshops with Damien and learnt loads. He has an easygoing approach to photography and does not overload you with technical stuff, though if you want that he will provide it for you.
He is a great communicator and has a good sense of fun.
If you want to know more about Street, architectural or landscape photography I highly recommend Damien.Damien has a wealth of knowledge and passion for his subject. 2016 a group of us spent a pleasant few hours with Damien in Bath. Sponsored by LUMIX/Panasonic. It was really enjoyable and we had cameras to try out. A bit of wandering around the streets of Bath including some tutoring. Great day. Would go again.
