About David

As a professional musician with two graduate degrees, the skills I've gained in high school, college, and graduate music theory/ear training courses have been integral to my own growth. While I was a student, I was employed by my schools as a music theory/ear training tutor. These opportunities helped me discover my passion for helping other students not only improve but also grow their own interest in the subject. Certain concepts can be tricky for some students, but there is nothing like watching that initial light bulb go off in their head after taking the time to break the concepts down. No matter what kind of musician you are, having the knowledge and skills gained from music theory concepts will set you apart from others. I am available and willing to take you to that next level!

Hello! I am available and delighted to offer tutoring sessions for music theory and ear training to students in high school (AP or non-AP courses), undergraduate, and graduate programs. I am also available and willing to assist students who are auditioning for music schools and need to prepare for theory and ear training entrance exams. This also applies to those who are freshly admitted into an undergraduate or graduate program and need to review topics they haven't seen in a while! Even if you are not in a specific program and just looking to grow as a musician, I'm always happy to help.

I make a point to adapt my teaching methods from student to student. The first tutoring session is a great opportunity for me to see what skills/topics a student is struggling with and how they learn best. Improving those skills are my first priority, as a student's confidence will increase as they consistently work on said skills. We will also determine over time together if the student needs more work with theory or ear training, but it is important to know that both subjects are always co-dependent with each other! It's also great to know what a student's interests are within the subject, as it would be most enjoyable for them to combine topics they need to improve on with these interests to make a fulfilling session.

All of those skills/topics combined will be included in my lesson plan for each individual student. Along the way, I will learn more about a student's strengths, weaknesses, and growing passions, and will continue to change lesson plans accordingly. The way I tailor my lessons according to each student's needs has helped result in tremendous growth from all of the students I've worked with in the past. Last but not least, I want to say that much of the skills that are taught through music theory and ear training require PRACTICE, and I am always happy to provide students with guided practicing and different methods they can use on their own time.

Thank you for reading this ad - I look forward to working with you!
