About Joy

Teaching and music are my life passions. I have been playing piano since I was 5 years old and cello since age 9. I received my undergrad in music and my master's in education. Since then I have been either teaching privately or in a school setting in addition to working as a performing musician, collaborating, recording and performing with various artists around the globe in addition to creating my own music as instrumentalist and singer-songwriter. Recently, I also became a vocal coach through the Modern Vocal Technique and now enjoy helping students discover their own unique voice. In short, my life passion is to share the joy of music through both performing and teaching.

About the lesson

What are your needs and your goals? How do you learn best? I cater my lessons around what each individual student needs, where the student wants to go and how fast they want to get there. I also believe learning should be an enjoyable, rewarding process and do my best to also tailor the classes around the student's interests. What songs/genres do you enjoy? Let's make a learning fun together!

With a Master's Degree and over 20 years of experience teaching different ages and in different countries, I have discovered that whatever instrument you are learning, in short, the most relaxed and natural technique will have the best results.

With vocal coaching, I came to love the Modern Vocal Technique that works on the level of the vocal chords, which teaches the student how to sing in a very healthy, relaxed, natural way.

When teaching the cello I follow Pablo Casal's relaxed technique and a unique method (created by Gretchen Dalley) which can quickly teach the student all skills necessary for orchestral performance.

For the piano, I have a classical foundation, but also am capable of teaching a chordal approach which can get the student making a big sound quickly and also have the capability to improvise and perform with others. If you want to learn to improvise and accompany yourself while singing and playing the piano, I know how to get you there.
