About Kat
- What kind of experience do you have?
I am currently employed as a lecturer and I have taught history to students at all levels from BA to PhD supervision at several universities, examined university degrees, run admissions at the University of Oxford. I have also worked in a top private school in London, and I have extensive experience helping students prepare for 11+, school admissions and university admissions.I have provided private tuition for nearly 10 years for many individual students many of whom have gone onto the secondary schools of their choice or top universities such as Oxford, Exeter and Durham I also have a particular specialism in adult learning, having worked at Birkbeck for years, so if you are getting back into studies after a break or just looking to learn about the world, I can help.
As a professional and published writer, I am an expert in working with students to improve their writing and communication skills. My approach to teaching is that each student has unique requirements. I take time to assess what approach and style of instruction suit the student. I always look for stimulating reading material for students and believe that variety in lessons, incorporating methods such as self-assessment or fun but challenging activities can be very beneficial. I try to use my wide experiences beyond the classroom and the world of academia to create exciting and effective lessons which also broaden students` horizons.
I have extensive experience in designing and running online learning and teaching, having coordinated this for my university during the Covid-19 pandemic for two years and training in online pedagogy.
Results from students attest to the success of these methods. At the university level, I have guided students onto successful academic careers, top degrees and further study. At history GCSE and A-Level students have consistently achieved top grades.

- Do you have a personal message for students?
I am enthusiastic and passionate about learning and education, and I strive to share that with my students while helping them achieve their goals. I believe that students achieve their best when lessons are engaging and entertaining, but also tailored to their particular learning style. My lessons are structured but with flexibility and a range of tasks, such as reading, analysis of sources, media, and discussion, as well as exam preparation if that’s important to your learning. I will suggest materials, exercises and tasks for students to work on outside sessions, though this will always be tailored to the student`s needs. I am always happy to work out a personalised learning and development plan. The pandemic has been tough on students at all levels, there’s been lots of lost learning, and I really want to use my expertise to make a difference.
