Have you ever wondered how music can transform your life? With over 20 years of teaching experience, I bring passion and excitement to every lesson. From my humble beginnings in my parents' front room to teaching thousands across various settings, I've honed a unique approach that caters to all ages and skill levels.

I'm a professional musician, conservatoire-trained in both classical and jazz. My playing career has taken me from festivals like Glastonbury, Download, Isle of Wight, all across the globe, and from BBC Radio to London's West End. I love passing on my passion and skill for classical music, music history, composition, recitals, jamming, sight reading, producing, and more.

Whether you're a young beginner or an advanced student, I offer personalized lessons that ensure your progress. My teaching journey has taken me from the Tramshed Centre for Performing Arts, Newham Music, Derby University, NESCOT College, DeMontford University and now I teach at a mixed secondary in Notting Hill. My students have gone on to be professional musicians, gaining places at top conservatoires such as Guildhall.

Perfect! Christopher's an excellent teacher. In my initial, free lesson, he asked lots of questions in order to establish exactly what I wanted to achieve. He was also interested in my previous experience of playing the piano and my general knowledge of music. Due to family issues I was unable to commit to weekly lessons, but he was flexible in terms of time and length of lessons. His approach to teaching immediately puts you at ease. Even in the weeks that I do not have a lesson, he happily responds to any questions I might have by email or text, often including short explanatory videos as attachments.

He was also interested in my previous experience of playing the piano and my general knowledge of music. Due to family issues I was unable to commit to weekly lessons, but he was flexible in terms of time and length of lessons. His approach to teaching immediately puts you at ease. Chris makes sure the lessons are what YOU want.
When I first started I went into this experience with a very negative mindset and thought I wouldn’t be able to pick it up as fast as I hoped or just thought I wouldn’t be able to learn anything; However, after my first lesson, I thought very differently. Chris takes every opportunity to reassure you of your good qualities while playing, making you excited to keep going. Also, he's excellent at reading people, so any tense feeling you have or thought you have or mistake you make while playing, Chris will catch on and talk you through it, making you feel more relaxed. I’ve had many teachers over my years learning piano and none have ever come close to being as effective and inspirational in regards to my development as a musician. His teaching is focused on ones own goals and interests as a musician rather than simply imposing his own interests, and he is good about being candid with what a student will have to work on in order to realistically achieve those goals and doesn’t let students simply disregard things they don’t like if they are important to their long term development. On top of this Chris is very good about helping you build better practice methods, creating exercises and methods for learning pieces that are very efficient and allow you to create focused practice sessions for yourself that make the most of your time. He also is good about checking in with ones practice regime and helping to find methods to make it more consistent and productive, which i personally find has also informed my planning and scheduling skills in other areas of my life such as school and personal projects. His teaching methods also equip you with the knowledge necessary to teach yourself as you develop, be that through ear training and theory that allows you to transcribe and understand music that you’re interested in, or through methods of learning pieces that you can then apply whenever learning anything. He is extremely reliable, rarely ever cancelling lessons and being as flexible as is possible with reorganising lesson times and dates when there are scheduling conflicts. Finally, he is also a very friendly and engaging person who makes lessons enjoyable and feels like you build a strong kinship with over the course of time you spend with him which makes lessons even more enjoyable and avoids the usual pitfalls of other teachers who are generally too boring or unnecessarily serious and drain away any enjoyment from lessons. I would wholeheartedly recommend him to anyone looking for a music teacher, he’s a rare find and I can assure you you won’t be disappointed.

When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?
I was really lucky: My dad put a keyboard in front of me when I was around 6 years old and he patiently and painstakingly taught me the basics. We always had music playing in the car, from Gershwin to Tina Turner, the Gypsy Kings, Bach, Elton John, Motown, you name it. Then and now, music has taken me to places in my mind that I can't describe.
Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?
For deep listening I love slow, intense adagios like Beethoven's Hammerklavier or Mahler's 9th Symphony. For relaxing it has got to be jazz: Wynton Kelly trio, Lee Konitz, Keith Jarrett.
Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.
If you've got the curiosity, rootless jazz chords - or 'shells' - can be a challenge. Regular practise is needed, because you have to relearn the way you think about chords. However the reward is a deeply colourful and dreamlike harmonic sound that connects us backwards in time through a century of cultural and musical development. It is the French Cuisine of harmony!
What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?
For me, composition is the biggest adventure to go on, because it involves an enquiry into BIG philosophical questions about why and how people listen to music. All musical composition bears reference to a time and a place, and a people. Even in the cheesiest television music, you might be hearing something evolved from West African Yoruba music, or 16th century European sacred choral music. Every rhythm, every chord, every scale is FROM somewhere; and to speak it fluently you can take a trip to that time and place with those people by listening even for a few minutes in that music.
What are your keys to success?
Be kind to yourself! Whether for the next 60 seconds or for the next week, set yourself a very easy goal. Maintain it for a while before challenging yourself to go further. Tiny increases in productivity add up over time.
Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.
In my opinion Chopin changed piano music (and all music) forever by simply writing the most beautiful chords. He must have been a man of great taste, exquisite detail, extraordinary sensitivity. David Bowie seemed to have hidden himself behind a big show, I would love to get to know the thoughtful artist behind the costume. Nadia Boulanger was supposedly the greatest musical educator of all time: I would love to know her secrets to motivating her students, and how her fearsome persona didn't result in all her students giving up!
Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.
When I was 18 I was auditioning for music conservatoires. I managed to get lessons with an (in)famously brutal teacher. I turned up, thinking I was the greatest music student of all time. He simply said "You're playing like a f****** schoolboy". It broke my heart, I had to start from scratch. Within weeks I was in the audition room for the Royal Academy looking at my hands like "How do I do this?!" I failed every audition. However the following year I only auditioned for one place: I competed with 150 people for 2 places at Trinity. I was offered an unconditional place there. My teacher had the trust in me to give brutal criticism, and the patience and experience to reconstruct my playing to a far higher level. It takes resilience, it takes time, and it takes faith!
What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?
For me, I think every teacher has to - without their students' knowing - learn what motivates them and what makes them feel safe and supported. Some students feel best when they are in a boisterous, honest environment; some require a quieter, more sensitive approach. There is no one-size-fits-all teaching method. Every student needs to be nourished and cared for.
