About Susannah

Canadian pianist Susannah Zou is an active soloist and chamber musician whose performances span Canada and Europe, with appearances in France, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain. Praised for her expressive playing and refined musical sensitivity, she has performed in distinguished venues including Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, the Maison Symphonique de Montréal, the Bell Performing Arts Centre, the Steinway Piano Gallery Vancouver, and the Arts and Letters Club of Toronto. Most recently, she was selected as a participant in the prestigious 10th Vigo International Piano Competition.

A dedicated and versatile collaborator, Susannah frequently performs with instrumentalists and vocalists, bringing nuance and depth to a wide range of repertoire. She is the co-founding pianist of Trio Hiraeth and Duo Avenoir. Her artistic development has been shaped by participation in leading international programs, including the Banff Centre’s Art of Piano, the Académie Francis Poulenc, Orford Musique, the Amalfi Coast Music Festival, the Holland International Music Sessions, Porto Pianofest, and the Chautauqua Institution Piano Program.

Beyond the stage, Susannah is deeply committed to musical leadership and community engagement as the founder of the British Columbia Notiva Society of the Arts, a nonprofit organization created to expand performance opportunities for young musicians and promote accessibility in music education through scholarship initiatives.

Susannah was a national finalist in the Canadian Music Competition in both 2023 and 2025 and has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Women’s Musical Club of Toronto Centennial Scholarship. She made her New York debut at Weill Recital Hall after winning First Prize at the Crescendo International Music Competition.

Susannah holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance (Honors) from the University of Toronto, where she studied with Lydia Wong and Enrico Elisi. She completed her Master of Music in Performance at the Université de Montréal under Jean Saulnier, studies privately with André Laplante, and continues her artistic training in the Artist Diploma program at the Université de Montréal on full scholarship. Alongside her active performing career, Susannah brings over seven years of dedicated teaching experience to her studio, where she delights in guiding students of all ages and levels to discover their own unique musical voice.

About the lesson

As a musician and educator, I don’t believe in a rigid, one-size-fits-all methodology. Every student is wonderfully unique, and I believe lessons must be completely personalized to nurture your individual artistic voice, rather than relying on a cookie-cutter approach. In my studio, everything I do is structured around the discovery of musicality. I help you build your technique so that it directly serves and supports your artistic expression, because I truly believe there is no technique without musicality, and vice versa.

Because every student learns differently, a typical lesson with me will adapt entirely to where you are and what your personal goals are. If you or your child are completely new to classical music, please know that no prior background or musical terminology is needed! I take pride in making music accessible, friendly, and engaging, breaking down concepts into clear, intuitive ideas so that classical music feels inviting and fun rather than intimidating. While classical piano is my primary passion and specialty, I am always happy to guide you toward whatever music brings you joy.

Whether you are a parent seeking a warm and inspiring first teacher for your child, a university student needing an extra ear for advanced repertoire, a working professional looking for a rewarding new hobby, or simply someone curious about trying a new instrument, my approach is tailored just for you.

What truly sets my teaching apart is my deep interest in unlocking emotional freedom and beauty through expression. To me, music is ultimately a vessel for that emotional connection, which is what makes the journey so beautifully individualized for every single person. I view our lessons as a collaboration. I can't wait to share my knowledge with you, but I also look forward to learning from you because my students are constantly teaching me new ways to listen, new ways to communicate, and new ways to become an even better musician myself. I would be absolutely thrilled to guide you on this journey!

Susannah has been a fantastic piano teacher for my 8-year-old daughter. She strikes the perfect balance between keeping lessons engaging and making sure foundational musical concepts are actually learned. My daughter always looks forward to her lessons because Susannah weaves fun activities into the routine, while still teaching proper technique, rhythm, and sight-reading. It has been amazing to see how much her confidence and appreciation for music have grown. If you are looking for a teacher who is patient, encouraging, and knows how to keep young kids motivated, I highly recommend Susannah!

Susannah is an incredible piano teacher. I took lessons with her to prepare for my Level 10 RCM exam, and she completely elevated how I approach the instrument.
What I appreciate most is the artistic freedom she gives you. Even with high-level classical repertoire, she doesn't just force her own interpretation; she actually listens to my ideas and helps me shape the music around what I want to express. During exam prep, instead of changing my vision, she helped me refine my technique so I could actually pull off the sound I wanted.
If you’re looking for a tutor who will treat you like a real musician and help you find your own voice, Susannah is the best!
