About Adam James

I am a professional artist and experienced educator with over 30 years of experience in art, teaching and educational leadership.

I studied Fine Art at Wimbledon School of Art, completed my PGCE at Goldsmiths, University of London, and spent more than twenty years working in UK education, including serving as Head of Art and Design and as an Arts Consultant.

For the past fourteen years, I have lived and worked in Mexico, where I founded and led The Heart of Learning, an independent, learner-centred educational community. My work there focused on helping young people develop confidence, creativity, independence and a genuine enthusiasm for learning.

Alongside my educational career, I have maintained a lifelong commitment to painting and creative writing.

My current artistic practice explores abstraction, light, perception and the relationship between visual experience and inner awareness. I work primarily with watercolour, ink, drawing and mixed media, continually experimenting with materials, techniques and ways of seeing.

Painting has always been much more than a professional activity for me. It is a lifelong exploration, one that continues to challenge and inspire me.

I particularly enjoy teaching because I believe everyone has the capacity to develop a meaningful creative practice. Some students want to improve their technical abilities, while others are looking for greater freedom, confidence or a more personal artistic direction.

Having spent many years working with learners of different ages, backgrounds and abilities, I understand the importance of patience, encouragement and adapting my approach to each individual.

I am now relocating permanently to the south of France, where I will continue developing my painting practice alongside teaching and educational consultancy.

What I enjoy most is helping people discover what they are capable of creating, particularly when they begin to develop the confidence to trust their own artistic instincts.

My online painting and drawing lessons are designed around the individual. Whether you are a complete beginner, returning to art after many years, or an experienced student wishing to develop your practice, I offer personalised guidance that responds to your interests, abilities and creative ambitions.

As both a practising artist and an experienced art educator, I believe that learning to paint is about much more than mastering techniques. It is also about developing observation, confidence, curiosity and, ultimately, your own artistic language.

Lessons can explore watercolour, drawing, mixed media, colour, composition, abstraction and experimental approaches to painting. We can work on specific technical skills, develop individual projects, or explore new directions in your creative practice.

My teaching approach is supportive, thoughtful and encouraging, combining practical demonstrations, constructive feedback and opportunities for independent exploration.

I particularly enjoy helping students move beyond simply reproducing images towards developing a more personal and expressive approach to their work.

Lessons take place online, allowing students to work comfortably in their own creative space, using their own materials.

My aim is to help you become a more confident, independent and adventurous artist, whatever your starting point.
