About Jason
I am a former college major in classical piano, a former director of a school of music, musical director & lead producer for a 10,000-member multisite church, & currently tour, perform, & record with national & local artists, while also teaching part-time at the state’s largest university’s school of the arts.
At this point, I've written hundreds of songs for recording & sync licensing, & currently work part-time for service that sells custom songs, which has me writing & recording up to 50-60 original songs per month.

I’ve playing music almost my entire life, & have been convincing people to pay me to do it since I was 15!
My belief is that the best instructors spark curiosity & teach students how to teach themselves. Everything I teach is completely tailored to the student‘s taste, skills, & goals. I want to help them become the songwriter they want to be.
Writing is an incredibly personal thing, & no two writers are identical. So I won't be teaching you how to write like me. I want to help you find a method that works best for you, & helps you sound more like yourself when you write. To do that, we'll start with talking through best practices & building great habits for inviting creativity in, & learning how to best capture ideas when they arrive. From there we'll learn about the craft of turning ideas into actual songs, because without the ability to work through all the details of a song, even the best ideas never make it across the finish line.
Whatever the approach, I filter my teaching method through one question: is it useful? My lessons are built on a foundation of my over two decades of being a musician, producer, & songwriter in the real world, one who continually gets hired.
I don’t strive to make you just a better writer, but a more complete artist, better at expressing your unique creative voice.

Jason is an incredible guitar and songwriting teacher! He deeply understands and explains music theory and how fundamental it is to lessons.
I met jason during a summer session at UNCSA where i took lessons from him. Was supposed to be a temporary thing but once I got back home I decided that I wanted him as a permanent guitar teacher. I would recommend Jason because he’s very patient and willing to teach me anything I want to learn. Also a very talented teacher. He’s able to explain anything I ask and more and makes me want to learn more about the complex little bits of guitar. Jason is a great teacher and I hope to be just as good as him one day!
