About Kieran

I am a professional guitarist and qualified music teacher with extensive experience as a soloist, accompanist, and band member across various genres including Rock, Soul, Funk, Folk, Latin, Reggae, Gypsy Jazz, Classical, and more. I play Lead Guitar for the band El Misti and we're about to release our second album in 2021. I have a Degree in Music Education from the international contemporary music awarding body, Rockschool, as well as Grade 8 Electric Guitar (Rockschool) and Grade 8 Classical Guitar (ABRSM), and an Audio Engineering Diploma (SAE Institute International). I have traveled the world extensively researching world music genres, especially in Latin America. During a 2.5yr journey through Latin America, I attended the School of Mariachi in Guadalajara, Mexico and performed with Cuban street band, Los Jubilados del Caribe, in Santiago de Cuba. I am originally from the musical city of Liverpool, UK, however in September 2020, I relocated to Mexico where I am continuing my research into Latin American music genres and sharing my knowledge with my students.

Find out more about Kieran

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

I was surrounded by music as a child and was always fascinated by how it worked. I would play with cassette tapes and vinyls, try to mimic sounds and whistle the melodies. I learned to play guitar by spending time and jamming with my uncle and his friends when I was 16. They introduced me to a wide range of genres including gypsy jazz, reggae and Latin.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

Silvio Rodriguez, Buena Vista Social Club, Django Reinhardt, Manu Chao, Dub Reggae, David Gilmour, Khruangbin…
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

I deliver courses in a range specific skills or genres such as funk, triads, or the CAGED system, but I find that the most enlightening to students is a more holistic approach of studying their favourite repertoire in detail and exposing the moving parts and memorable patterns within the music, the mastery of the visualisation of the guitar neck, music's similarity to language and speech patterns, and understanding the emotional qualities of intervals, chords, scales and modes so that you can dial into and evoke those emotions at will.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and wh

I think music can be as complicated or as simple as you want it to be, no matter what instrument you play. Some people can learn through pure innate instinct and be world famous. Other find mastery via a more analytical approach. Or a mix of both. Each to their own.
  • What are your keys to success?

Regular practice. Learning at lower tempos to get the correct form and muscle memory. Play what you love, and love what you play.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Would love to chew the fat with John Lennon to hear his inimitable direct, non-apologetic political satire, hilarious nonsense, and beautiful way with words.

Silvio Rodriguez to explain what all of those beautiful metaphors mean.

Lee Scratch Perry to show me his maverick mixing techniques.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

One day I decided to quit my job, sell or give away lots of my stuff and fly to Cuba on a one-way ticket to learn Latin guitar styles. I ended up meeting one of my heroes, Eliades Ochoa, at the Casa de la Trova in Santiago de Cuba, and played and sang live with a full mariachi band in a plaza in Guadalajara, Mexico, amongst other musical adventures around the world.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I am largely self-taught but the handful of formal guitar lessons I attended in the past were full of vague and boring drills that had no context and I would forget most stuff within 5 minutes of leaving the lesson and/or not be motivated to practice it.

As a teacher, I ensure we are learning the material you love and that will get you towards your goals. I provide full transcriptions of everything I teach you, accessible forever via an interactive notation app sync'd to Youtube videos which you can loop, slow down and jam along with my custom backing tracks.

The visual element is also often neglected in music education but I always provide full neck diagrams so that you can visualise scale, triad and arpeggio patterns on the neck.
