About Ruby

I’m an experienced and passionate English teacher with a PhD in English Literature, a PGCE and almost a decade of teaching experience across further and higher education.

I have taught and tutored GCSE English Language and Literature and tutored English Literature A-level for many years, as well as taught literature and literary and social theory to undergraduates at Queen Mary University of London. This breadth of experience means I understand not only what students need to succeed in exams, but also how to develop the deeper analytical, critical and essay-writing skills that underpin outstanding work.

I was awarded a University of London teaching prize for the clarity and comprehensiveness of my feedback. I believe that constructive feedback should do more than identify mistakes: it should show students exactly how to improve and give them the confidence to do so independently.

My PGCE has given me a strong grounding in educational strategies and personalised teaching, which I combine with my academic background and extensive classroom experience. I am particularly interested in helping students develop sophisticated interpretations, build persuasive arguments and express their ideas with clarity and confidence.

Alongside teaching, I am a published academic writer and have written both scholarly papers and opinion pieces on literature, culture and social issues, including for The i and Freedom Press.

Whether you are preparing for GCSE or A-Level examinations, looking to improve your essay writing, at undergraduate level or simply want to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of English Literature, I offer rigorous, supportive and individually tailored tuition.

About the lesson

My lessons are friendly, engaging and tailored to each student’s individual needs, whether you are looking to build confidence, strengthen your analytical skills, improve essay writing or prepare for exams.

I provide all the resources and materials you need, drawing on a substantial collection of teaching resources, model essays, texts and exam materials developed throughout my teaching career. Lessons are structured around clear goals and include plenty of opportunities to practise and develop independent thinking.

I teach remotely and provide weekly homework through Google Classroom, giving students structured support between lessons and helping them make steady progress outside our sessions.

Perfect! Ruby is a fantastic tutor and I would highly recommend her to any parent looking for support with 11+ preparation. She is currently tutoring my 9-year-old daughter and we have been so impressed with her.

Ruby is warm, patient and encouraging, and quickly built a lovely rapport with my daughter. She has a real ability to explain things clearly and in a way that makes sense to her, while also knowing when to challenge her and push her a little further. Lessons are engaging and positive, and my daughter genuinely enjoys working with her, which has made such a difference to her confidence and attitude towards 11+ preparation.

Ruby also has a really good understanding of the 11+ process and what children need to be working towards. She is familiar with the skills and different types of questions required and is able to give clear guidance about how best to approach preparation. As a parent, this is incredibly reassuring, as the 11+ process can feel quite overwhelming and it is helpful to know that there is a clear plan and purpose behind what they are working on.

What I particularly value is that Ruby doesn't take a one-size-fits-all approach. She pays close attention to where my daughter is confident and where she needs more support, and adapts her teaching accordingly. She is very good at identifying gaps in understanding, strengthening the underlying skills and then gradually building up to more challenging 11+ style questions. She also works on exam technique and problem-solving strategies, rather than simply teaching children how to answer particular types of question.

Ruby manages to make the preparation feel structured and purposeful without putting unnecessary pressure on my daughter. At nine, I really wanted someone who could prepare her thoroughly while still keeping learning enjoyable and protecting her confidence, and Ruby strikes that balance brilliantly.

She is also reliable, organised and professional, and it is clear that she puts a great deal of thought into her teaching. I feel very confident that my daughter is developing both the academic skills and the confidence she will need for the 11+, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Ruby to other families looking for a knowledgeable, supportive and genuinely excellent tutor.
