About Chris

Hi! I'm Chris, a private tutor offering specialist computer training for beginners, inexperienced users and those who need help getting to grips with a new device.

I've been using computers pretty much every day for as long as I can remember - for fun, at school, at work and in life. I use my laptop and my smartphone to do most of the things I need to do in life, and it feels perfectly normal to me.

Yet I understand that there are a huge number of people out there for whom using this technology isn't normal. They're used to a different way of doing things, and to them, computers and smartphones are completely alien. They're complicated and nothing like what they're used to, so it's no wonder they can feel intimidated, perplexed, and, as the world becomes increasingly digital, left behind and excluded from society.

If you're one of these people, I know how you feel, and I'm here to help you. You don't deserve to be digitally excluded and left behind by society - instead, you deserve the guidance and support you need to move into the digital world and be able to do all of the things you want to do. People I've taught in the past have commented on how patient and supportive I am. I don't assume you know anything, take things slowly, step-by-step, and show you how to use technology to do the things you want to do in life, so that rather than feeling left behind, you feel confident and comfortable using modern systems and that you belong in our modern society - because you do.

I love teaching. It's something I've always wanted to do and known I can do, and helping people in the community like you to get to grips with technology and do things digitally is a great way for me to do just that.

I'm fully insured and have an enhanced DBS certificate, which I'll be happy to show or provide a copy of on request.

About the lesson

I offer tuition both online and face-to-face, and both 1-1 and small group sessions (max. 5 students*).

Your first session with me will be a 30-minute discussion where we’ll get to know each other a bit and talk about where you are in your studies, what you want to achieve and which areas of the subject you need help with so I can plan how best to help you achieve your aims. All subsequent sessions will last for 1 hour.

In our sessions, I'll introduce you to the aspect of computers we're covering from the very start, and we'll go back to basics as far as we need to. Don't feel like any topic is too simple to cover - it absolutely isn't. If you need me to show you how to turn the computer on and log in, we'll do that together, no problem - I understand that if you haven't seen done something before, you won't know about it, no matter how obvious it might be to others.

I'll show you how to do what you want to do step-by-step. We'll go through each screen, each of the key buttons and each element one-by-one before moving on, so you'll understand exactly what your device is showing you, what everything on your screen does, and what you're doing at each stage. I'll show you how to go back and start again if you get lost. That way, when it's time for you to do the activity we're covering in the future, you'll know exactly what to do.

I'll provide you with resource sheets to help you remember the key concepts and techniques we've covered in our sessions.
These resource sheets will also have some practice exercises for you to try - I'll expect you to do these exercises and practise what you've learnt in between sessions, as that's the only way to get good!

For online sessions I use an online collaborative whiteboard with a screen sharing function, which allows us both to see what you've got on your screen and me to show you what to do. You'll be sent a link to use my whiteboard by email prior to each session.

This first lesson offered with Chris will allow you to get to know each other and clearly specify your needs for your next lessons.

Details

Prices quoted above are for 1-1 sessions. Group sessions are charged at the corresponding individual session price, plus £10 per additional student (up to a maximum of 5 students).

A 25% premium on the session price applies for sessions held on:
- Saturdays after 9am
- Weekdays from 7am - 8am and 7pm - 8pm

A 50% premium on the session price applies for sessions held on:
- Sundays and bank holidays
- Saturdays before 9am
- Weekdays before 7am

Sessions are available at the following times:
- Monday-Friday: 6am - 8pm (max. 6 sessions / day)
- Saturdays: 7am - 2pm (max. 3 sessions / day)
- Sundays and bank holidays: 10am - 1pm (max. 2 sessions / day)

Your first session will be a free 30-minute consultation to discuss your studies, your aims, which areas you understand and which areas you need help with. If time permits, we will start going over one of the topics you have suggested to give you a flavour of a typical session.
