About Jessica
Hi, I'm Jessica. I’m a Philosophy graduate currently working as a Higher Level Teaching Assistant in a private school, where I support students aged 11–18 including within the SEN department.
I graduated with a 2.1 Philosophy BA from a Russell Group university — the University of Nottingham. Following this, I worked as a private nanny for a family in New York. I now currently work as a Higher Level Teaching Assistant in a private school, where I support students aged 11–18, specialising within the SEN department. In my current role I work alongside teachers within the classroom as well as planning and delivering 1–1 focused learning sessions with a variety of students, including those with Autism, Dyslexia and ADHD. This experience has given me a strong understanding of how to adapt teaching methods to suit different abilities, break down complex ideas and build student confidence over time.
I’ve always really enjoyed subjects like Religious Studies and Philosophy because they gave me the chance to think creatively, explore different viewpoints and relate to the world uniquely— not just memorise content.
Through my work in school, I’ve developed a calm and patient approach and I genuinely enjoy helping students who might be feeling stuck, overwhelmed or unsure of their own ability. I know that everyone learns differently, so I take the time to explain things in ways that actually make sense to each individual.
I have experience working 1:1, in small groups and running revision sessions, so I’m used to adapting lessons depending on what each student needs most.
I’d say I’m friendly and approachable, I try to create a relaxed environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and building their confidence over time. I hope to make all my lessons fun and enjoyable and prioritise building positive relationships with all my students.
My aim is not just to help improve grades, but to help students feel more capable and confident in themselves.

My approach to tutoring is structured, supportive and tailored to each individual student’s needs and learning style. I always prioritise a friendly approach, ensuring I take the time to build a positive relationship with all my students. I take a collaborative, team-based approach to tutoring, where students feel actively involved in their own learning. I believe students make the most progress when they feel heard, understood and part of the process, rather than being passively taught.
My lessons are suitable for:
- GCSE Religious Studies students
- GCSE Combined Science students
- A-Level Philosophy and Ethics students
- Students who may need additional support, including those with SEN or lower confidence

1. GCSE Religious Studies & A-Level Philosophy & Ethics:
I offer tutoring in GCSE Religious Studies and A-Level Philosophy & Ethics, drawing on both my academic background in Philosophy and my current experience working in a school setting. I am familiar with the key exam boards and specifications, and I understand what students need to do to access higher marks, particularly when it comes to essay structure, evaluation and developing clear, well-reasoned arguments.
In my sessions, I focus on:
- Helping students understand and apply key theories and concepts
- Developing strong essay writing and analytical skills
- Building clear structure for AO1 and AO2 responses
- Improving exam technique and confidence under timed conditions
I enjoy these subjects because they encourage critical thinking and discussion; I aim to help students feel more confident expressing and developing their own ideas.

2. GCSE Combined Science (Biology, Chemistry & Physics)
I also offer tutoring in GCSE Combined Science, supporting students across Biology, Chemistry and Physics. In my current role as a Higher Level Teaching Assistant in a private school, I regularly support students within GCSE Science lessons. This gives me a strong understanding of the curriculum, common misconceptions and what is required for success in exams.
I focus on helping students:
- Break down complex scientific ideas into clear, manageable steps
- Strengthen understanding of key concepts rather than relying on memorisation
- Improve confidence with exam questions and application of knowledge
- Develop effective exam technique, including how to structure answers for marks
I have experience working with a range of abilities, including students who need additional support or a different approach to learning. I aim to make science feel more accessible and less overwhelming.

Session structure and teaching style:
In my sessions, I focus on three key areas:
1. Clear understanding of content (simplifying and explaining key concepts)
2. Developing strong exam technique (essay structure, evaluation and timing)
3. Building confidence and independent thinking
A typical lesson lasts either 30 or 60 minutes and is structured but flexible. Depending on the student’s needs, sessions may include:
- Reviewing and reinforcing class content
- Working through past exam questions
- Practising essay writing and improving structure
- Targeting specific areas of difficulty
In my sessions, I encourage students to ask questions, share their thoughts and identify areas they find challenging. This allows us to work together to focus on what will have the most impact, whether that’s building subject knowledge, improving exam technique or boosting confidence.
For students preparing for exams, I place a strong emphasis on understanding what examiners are looking for and how to apply knowledge effectively under timed conditions.
