About Shira

I'm an organized, considerate & dedicated teacher with years of experience teaching chess to students. I care about my students and seeing them succeed-- not just over the board, but in their love of the game.

As a former top rated 100 woman in the US, I have a unique perspective on the challenges faced by young women in a male-dominated sport. And in addition to chess tutoring in underprivileged schools across Philly, I have also been a tutor for multiple all-girls groups and currently teach two young girls privately.

As a graduate of Princeton University, I've seen how chess can enhance other areas of my life. In addition to teaching students chess skills that apply directly over the board, I teach students skills that they can apply to other areas of their lives, from patience to forethought.

About the lesson

I'm an experienced chess player and chess teacher who understands what students need not only to improve their play but to increase their confidence over the board. As a psychology student at Princeton, I also have an understanding of the anxieties and cognitive biases that young students tend to grapple with- chess is a psychological game, too!

I teach students methods to remember key strategies like checkmating patterns and openings. I group lessons into themes until students show mastery, then move on; one week we might focus on checkmates, and then the next we go over forks and pins. I mold each lesson based on the student and his/her needs.

My specialty is teaching younger students in beginner and intermediate levels (complete beginner up to 1400 level).
