• When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

  I first developed an interest one and a half years ago when I moved from Australia to live overseas. Not having much work I decided to give online tutoring a go. I started with one company and now work for three different companies including having my own students through Superprof! I love having my own clients and students who I can get to know on a more personal basis.

• Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

  I mostly teach English; including grammar, vocabulary, reading, phonics and spelling. I find all aspects of English are interconnected beginning with basic phonics and early literacy skills moving forward to spelling and reading and then further enhancing writing through learning new and interesting vocabulary. I love asking children where they come from and what sort of interests and hobbies they have. This is a great way to work on speaking skills and build relationships with students.

• Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

  I have an incredible role model who is a very experienced senior teacher. I worked with her a few years ago at a school in Darwin, Australia. Watching her teach was so inspiring. She showed genuine care for each and every student and conducted lessons that were sequential, super engaging and fun! Her energy was electric and her behaviour management skills were top notch. I will always remember this teacher and I hope to be as influential as she is to so many children.

• What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

  Kind, patient, fun, organised, passionate, reliable, caring, knowledgeable, adaptable.

• Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

  They say you have to love your job to be a teacher and I absolutely do! Not only do I want children to succeed in English but I want them to succeed in all areas of their life; in their self-confidence, their self esteem and their eagerness to learn more!

• What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

  I feel that teaching ESL (English as a Second Language) students to be a challenge as I am a native english speaker. You have to constantly put yourself in the students' shoes and realise how difficult it can be to learn a new language. As I currently live in a French speaking community I do understand how this feels a little!

• Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

  I particularly enjoy teaching phonics and helping children read. Reading is vital for every age. Not only is it enjoyable but extremely beneficial for students to read everyday! My other passion would be cooking and baking as I put a lot of love into that as well. I love making delicious food for people and seeing them enjoy what I have put together.

• What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions)?

  I believe I am a Superprof as I am a very experienced teacher, both in the classroom and online. I have taught children of all ages and love to help as many people as I can! I am an excellent communicator and very reliable. I have a very different teaching schedule for many of my students as I find that something that works for one child may not work for another. With every student having their own personality and learning goals, I aim to create individualised teaching sessions to suit the needs of each and every child and I believe that is what makes me a Superprof!
