About Sally

# About Me

Hello! I’m an experienced English teacher with eight years of experience teaching in secondary schools, and I’m passionate about helping young people become confident, capable and enthusiastic learners.

Before becoming a teacher, I spent two years working as a youth worker. This was where my passion for working with teenagers really began. I loved building positive relationships with young people, understanding what made them tick and helping them recognise their own strengths and potential. That experience ultimately inspired me to become a teacher, and I still get the same sense of purpose and enjoyment from working with teenagers today. I genuinely believe that teaching is about much more than academic results — it is about helping young people develop confidence in themselves and their abilities.

Throughout my teaching career, I have taught students across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 and currently work as a Head of Department for English. I have also spent four years leading Key Stage 3, giving me extensive experience supporting students at different stages of their academic development. I have experience marking AQA English Language Paper 1, giving me a strong understanding of GCSE assessment and what examiners are looking for.

As a tutor, I take a child-first approach. I get to know each student as an individual, identify their strengths and areas for development, and adapt my teaching to meet their specific needs. My aim is for students to leave each lesson not only knowing more, but feeling more confident in their ability to succeed.

About the lesson

My approach to tutoring is structured, supportive and child-centred. I take a holistic approach, recognising that every student is different and that effective tutoring should respond to their individual strengths, areas for development and specific needs. My aim is not only to improve academic outcomes, but also to build confidence, independence and a positive relationship with English.

I am strongly routine-based, using regular recall activities to strengthen students’ knowledge before applying it to exam-style questions. I place particular emphasis on exam technique, reviewing model responses and identifying how students can make precise, sentence-level improvements to their writing.

Lessons are typically 55 minutes and are tailored to each student, whether they are developing foundational English skills or preparing for GCSE examinations. I work with students across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4.

I have eight years’ experience teaching English in secondary schools, including four years as Head of Key Stage 3 and nine months as Head of Department. In my 2026 GCSE results, 93% of my Literature class achieved Grade 5+ and 89% of my Language class achieved Grade 4+. I also have experience marking AQA English Language Paper 1.
