About Oliver

I am an experienced linguist (graduate of both the University of Leeds and the Open University) and have both translation experience and teaching experience professionally.

I hold high level qualifications in skills training, relevant to both languages and other professional training domains. I have been taught academically by both the Alliance Française and UK universities. My speaking experience abroad has been amassed mainly in Île-de-France and the Alps, though I have spent a little time in the South of France too.

As a tutor, I am also confident to admit that I am always still a student myself. Along with teaching French and Spanish, I am currently teaching myself the basics of Japanese, and am getting into German after briefly studying it at school.

I have been a mentor for undergraduate students for 3 years, and am an active member of The Open University Student Association, after having also studied there for 2 years.

My day-to-day work currently involves a lot of teaching, mainly to professionals needing practical skills and industry-specific knowledge for the world coffee trade - my teaching is accredited by the Speciality Coffee Association too, so I am not just a language lover!

If you would like to know more about my teaching, or anything else to do with tutoring, please do get in touch! :)

I teach by prioritising the most useful content for my students, rather than covering topics that may or may not be relevant to their language learning goals.

Usually, we will cover the most important language structures first, targeting the most used grammar and the words most commonly said and written.

Why would we do that? This teaches you the most relevant and commonly needed language first (roughly 80% of what you'll actually hear, see and speak). This will take you to higher levels of understanding much, much earlier. It also gives you a more practically useful language arsenal much quicker than you would usually get it.

Usually I recommend taking a course of 3 lessons with me, then reviewing everything in the following week to accurately gauge your progress and response to things. Then, we can adapt if necessary to what your personal needs and strengths are.

Once we are teaching comfortably within your preferred learning styles, your target language is easier built autonomously, and further sessions will become both cheaper and optional. Why? Once you've got a fundamental, functional start to a language and its structures, the acquisition of it becomes much, much easier to learn, but also to teach. It also means that the process of learning for you becomes less mentally taxing, and you can 'perform' it much more regularly without feeling fatigued. Instead of spending the same amount per session, I'd then recommend one more session per week at a lower rate!
