About Florence

Hey there!

My name’s Florence and I’m an experienced and enthusiastic violin tutor and gigging musician based in Leeds. I have 10+ years of teaching experience, most recently working as a whole class, individual and ensemble teacher with Lewisham Music and as a peripatetic teacher in Ivydale Primary school.

I have just completed my postgraduate studies at Goldsmiths University, for which I attained a Distinction and have a First from Leeds Conservatoire, where I studied Classical and Jazz violin.

Alongside teaching, I play in a variety of projects:

-Arranger and Violinist with Stolen Velour as part of his Opera North Residency
-Violinist with experimental pop artist 'Martha Skye Murphy'
-Member of The London Ambient Orchestra and No.Art Ensemble
-My own Dream Pop project 'FLOCO'

About the lesson

After my two years of teaching with Lewisham Music and Ivydale school, I have found that I really enjoy teaching a variety of abilities, from complete beginners to people working towards graded examinations. Teaching is something I find very rewarding, as I enjoy communicating my love for violin to pupils and inspiring them to continue their exploration of music.

My lessons are open to everyone, regardless of age and ability level, as each lesson will be individually catered to the needs of the pupil. Whether you want to work towards a specific grade exam, or just have fun learning one of your favourite tunes, I’m here to help! My teaching style aims to instil a joy in playing the violin, as well as music as a whole, whilst tackling the more technical aspects of the violin. I feel that the development of a ‘musical ear’ is just as important as having an effective violin technique and engaging in the theoretical elements of music.

I have successfully put pupils through both Trinity and ABRSM graded examinations, exclusively receiving Merit and Distinction results.

I’m trained in a wide variety of musical styles including: classical/jazz and folk violin, as well as playing in rock bands with my electric violin and guitar effects pedals. I’m happy to focus on one genre, or take a combined approach, by teaching folk tunes alongside pieces for a graded exam, for example. Having studied jazz violin for 3 years as part of my degree, I’m a confident improviser and can train pupils to improvise where desired. I also perform with electronics regularly and can offer pupils an insight into contemporary performance with effects pedals, whether that be in a rock, pop or experimental context.
