About Mia
I am a 23 year old software engineer currently employed in a fast paced startup in the Cape Town city bowl area.
I completed my BSc Honours degree in Computer Science at the University of Pretoria in 2018 with distinction while working part-time as a software engineer in the Menlyn area. Thereafter I joined an insurtech startup and subsequently relocated to Cape Town.
I have gone through a period of intense growth in terms of skill-acquisition and workflow. The startup ecosystem in Cape Town is unique in its relentlessness and obsession with progress and I am incredibly fortunate to have spent some time in this pressure cooker of innovation. My main focus as an engineer has shifted from frontend development to backend architecture and DevOps.
I am fully bilingual (Afrikaans and English) and lived in a University of Pretoria residence for the entirety of my academic career which means my interpersonal skills grew alongside my academic skills. Personally, I have a love for cult films, experimental electronic music and avant garde fashion. I make and alter clothing in my spare time and languages and writing (although informally pursued) are also passions of mine. I live an active lifestyle, regularly going on hikes and attending yoga classes.

My teaching methodology is very much tailored to the individual but I find two concepts can be applied universally.
First off I always try explain the source material in the simplest most bare bones way possible to students. I assume minimal prior knowledge to minimize friction and misunderstandings.
Secondly I believe there is great value in having examples relate directly to real life. I try to keep things relevant to the modern world and tech space, I don't believe in using silly nonsensical, once off projects as a teaching tool.

Details
- If tutoring is done at the student's location and travel time from Cape Town city centre to that location is greater than 20 minutes a R50 fee will be charged to cover travel costs.
- Cancellations must be done at least 48 hours prior to the lesson otherwise the full amount for that lesson will still be charged.
