About Matei
Qualifications:
Master of Philosophical Studies (MPhil. Stud.) - UCL - Research
Bachelor of Honours (BA Hons.) - UCL - First Class (1:1)
Bachelor of Honours Awards - 2/2 Letters of Commendation.
I have been a mentor and a teacher in various roles for a variety of subjects for a number of years. Whilst I am able to teach on virtually any philosophical topic given enough notice, in the past I have taught:
Theoretical Philosophy:
- Logics (Various Types)
- Set Theory
- Philosophy of Language
- Metaethics
- Metaphysics
- Philosophy of Mind
Normative Philosophy
- Ethics
- Applied Ethics
- Moral Psychology
- Aesthetics
History of Philosophy
- Ancient Greek Philosophy
- Early Modern Philosophy
- 19th & 20th Century Philosophy
Continental Philosophy
- French Existentialism
- German Philosophy (e.g., Nietzsche)
I do not pretend to have an encyclopædic knowledge of these areas of philosophy--no philosopher does--but I am well-familiarised with them and the central ideas, debates, and views they concern as well as the idiosyncratic philosophical traditions they have. Consequently, I will frequently have to read-up on the relevant material for our sessions.

I strongly believe that anyone can be a top-achiever with a little help.
Our sessions together will be tailored to your prescribed curriculum (focusing on what you need help with in particular). Given at least 5 days notice after our first session, I will prepare teaching materials and resources for you specifically to learn from and practice on.
If I believe it will be helpful, I might go beyond your prescribed curriculum. This mostly means beginning at a more elementary stage than it allows for. I do this whenever a more fundamental understanding of aspects of your material would be beneficial for mastering the material itself.
(Of course, if your desire that more advanced material is also covered, this can be arranged. I only recommend covering certain topics and only promise results if we do so, but what material we actually cover will ultimately be up to you.)
In our sessions, I'd treat you as a bona fide philosopher. This means we will use a mixture of elenchos (as practiced by Socrates) and learning-by-teaching. The first means asking you questions rather than giving you answers; and the second means making you present your understanding, rather than listening to me present mine.
There is a vast amount of research that strongly supports the use of this strategy as being best for almost any subject, and especially for philosophy. The goal is for you to achieve both an expert knowledge and a deep understanding of the material we cover, resulting in a mastery of it.
Logic is taught slightly differently. Learning logic is just like learning another language and thus it is best done through practice. (I know this because I speak three languages: Swedish, English, and German--I am also learning French and Romania--and so I have a great deal of experience when it comes to learning a language.)
--First Session--
The first session I'd have with you would be aimed at finding out whether we are good for each other: i.e., whether working together would be beneficial.
This means a large part of the session is spent in coming to grips with what you actually require from tutoring and, based on this, forming an efficient and effective, preliminary plan for future sessions. This may also involve some actual tutoring so that you have a better idea what future sessions would be like.
After the first session, unless I make it clear that I think another tutor or some non-tutor-based method of learning would be more suited for you, it is totally up to you to decide whether you would like further tutoring sessions.
The first session is free precisely because it is exploratory and a-typical in ways described above.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor.
Matei is exceptionally talented at breaking down complex concepts into understandable parts. He asks questions and helps you challenge any assumptions you may not be aware of. Having worked with him multiple times I can confidently say he is organised, reliable and regularly brings out the best in the people he works with.
I'm a fellow student of Philosophy, and I've known Matei for the better part of our academic lives. My immediate and sustained impression of his philosophy, ergo his approach to problems, understanding and method, were such that I consider him a paragon.
I cannot begin to measure Matei's knowledge in the field; it is evidently vast in our many conversations, and particularly helpful in his feedback of my own work. I am certain anyone under his tutelage will come to a greater understanding of all branches in this discipline.
Beyond his wide understanding, Matei's ability to guide others through the complexities has been cemented as exemplar by our peers. As such, I couldn't recommend him to potential tutees highly enough.I have known Matei for about 6 months. He's an excellent logic teacher and helped me pass one of my first year modules with a 94% grade and is helping me pass another one this summer. Couldn't have done it without him!
Matei approaches each individual person he tutors personally by taking the time to understand how each individual likes to study. He’s incredibly patient with the different paces of study and ensures that you have understood topics through your experiences and thoughts, rather than textbook memory games. I’ve known Matei for a long time and have confidence in him whenever I have a philosophical endeavour. (10/10 would recommend)
