About Jake
I am currently completing a PhD in English at Lancaster University focusing on the structures of clone narratives in science fiction. I have already completed a research masters before taking time to teach at London Design and Engineering UTC as an in-school tutor, supporting SEND students and others held back by lockdowns in getting to GCSE standard and beyond. In this capacity I tutored both in-person and online, and developed a proven track record of success in my GCSE students. Though I don't seek publication very often these days, my poetry has previously been published by the Poetry Society, Emerge Journal, Paper Swans Press, among others. I was also a 2018 Tower Poet at Christ Church, Oxford University. I currently run an education organisation at Lancaster University and have offered support to a number of undergraduates undertaking different degrees in the humanities and social sciences.

For my English students I employ a student-centred, skills-based approach that I used to great success during my time at London Design and Engineering UTC to support struggling GCSE students to achieve desirable grades. I emphasise applied literacy and interdisciplinarity, guiding students through their English courses through connections across subjects, especially for students whose interests lay elsewhere. During my time as an in-school tutor, students I worked with for ten weeks saw an average of two grades of improvement (the typical improvement expected over the entire two years of a GCSE course). First free half-hour will be used to determine current skills and necessary development.
For prospective poetry writers I guide students through traditional forms and teach how to deviate from them in creative ways. I teach techniques for developing concepts into complete poems, and further teach them to edit efficiently to produce publishable work.
For undergraduate students, I support development of research skills, essay writing, proofreading, and interdisciplinarity. I emphasise structure and consistency in undergraduate work, and teach academic writing as a genre that has its own language and syntax that can be employed from the earliest undergraduate essays through to final dissertations.

I am confident that Jake would be a valuable addition to any educational establishment, particularly for those seeking to enhance their English language and literature proficiency.
Jake worked as an in-school Yipiyap tutor and supported a range of learners. Jake received overwhelmingly positive feedback from staff and students, who particularly praised his adaptability, professionalism and his generally high level of teaching ability. This, on top of his passion for the subject and breadth & depth knowledge concerning it, has made Jake a highly effective tutor.
