About Thaddeus

I am a 24 year old PhD student in composition at the University of Sussex, and if your goal is to compose music that truly reflects your individuality, I can teach you to express an original identity in the genres of contemporary experimental and electro-acoustic music.

As my training is highly specialised, I prefer to focus on the pure composition of art music with my students. This may be done entirely with a pencil and paper or using a range of electronic and software tools, or it may involve sound installations and sonic art. Although the traditional cultural and technical barriers to entry to my discipline are high, I am here to hold the door open for you.

I studied Arts and Humanities at Yale-NUS College in Singapore and spent time in Austria before doing my PhD in music composition in England, and I will bring you the most cutting edge tools and critical approaches to experimental sound practices that exist in the world today.

About the lesson

I teach a listening based approach to composition which treats knowledge of traditional music theory as an opportunity, but not a requirement. My research in my PhD involves developing new technologies and resources to democratise composition and lower the technical barrier to entry for beginning composers and artists coming from other disciplines, and I apply these regularly in my lessons with students. I will help guide your listening and show you ways to articulate your ideas more clearly, but I will never dictate what you compose or the style in which you compose it.

I have six years teaching experience, and I have taught over 10,000 online English lessons with students from around the world. I am pursuing my teaching certificate through my current music composition PhD programme, and I have a lot of experience working with young learners and those needing language support, especially Spanish, 普通話, and German.

My lessons are between one and three hours weekly depending on the needs of the student, and I teach individual lessons based on giving feedback on original composition exercises. You will compose for each lesson and listen to assigned pieces to expand your knowledge of 20th and 21st century sound practices. Everything we do in lessons will go towards building our own original portfolio of compositions.
