About Kévin-Lâm

I'm Kévin-Lâm, a PhD student in applied mathematics at the Jacques Louis Lions Laboratory in Jussieu. After a preparatory class (MPSI-MP*, which is roughly the French equivalent of an intensive two-year undergrad course in math and physics) at the Blaise Pascal high school in Orsay (1st in its field in 2020). After a competitive entrance exam, I joined the École Centrale de Lyon ( top 7 best engineering school in France) and then did a double degree in computer science with the Technische Universität in Darmstadt. Missing math too much, I later switched to applied mathematics.

I've always been curious and enjoyed explaining things, so teaching naturally appealed to me as a way to share the reasons behind my curiosity and the beauty of science and the world around us. I first learned math with my mother, an accountant, who had a very practical approach, and that gave me a methodical and visual way of thinking about mathematics.

Also, by making connections with the real world, I came to understand the reach and relevance of mathematical concepts. That's why I believe that mathematical reasoning—thanks to its rigor and structure—is useful to everyone, and for that reason, it should be shared as widely as possible.

Because of my interest in science, I've also watched a lot of science videos, and through teaching, I hope to give back to the community. Along those lines, I also take part in science outreach work alongside my PhD, doing presentations at the Maison Poincaré (the math museum) to introduce middle and high school students to my research and to the world of scientific research in general.

When it comes to how I run a lesson, I think practice is key: after going over any tricky points from the lesson, I focus on exercises.
For students who are struggling, I choose standard problems that highlight the reasoning they need to develop. For those who want to go beyond the course material, I pick more in-depth exercises to help them grasp the deeper meaning of the concepts and their implications.
For students in preparatory classes, every exercise requires a solid understanding of the concepts involved, but I know how to pick the ones that are most effective for success in competitive exams.

I give students time to think through how to solve a problem, guide their thinking if needed, and point out the key hints they shouldn’t miss to help steer their reasoning.

I teach a way of thinking that allows for a structured approach to solving problems.

I know how to adjust my explanations to the student’s level and I’m patient. I’ve taught throughout my own studies, to students at all levels (even my own), helping them build a rigorous and organized way of thinking, and breaking down or illustrating concepts when needed.

I’m also very visual, and so my teaching style is too, which helps make math more concrete: abstraction can often be intimidating or confusing for students.
