About Reuben
I have always loved to learn and want to share my enthusiasm for 'figuring things out and questioning everything' with those who may be struggling or want to improve their understanding. I have always enjoyed taking hard-to-understand concepts and breaking them down into simple and relatable 'bite-sized' chunks. When you understand and are excited, so am I! I am a PhD-trained biological scientist with extensive experience in teaching and mentoring a wide variety of subjects and students alike. From basic and general science to advanced core concepts like molecular and cell biology, genetics, systems biology, and experimental research, I'll patiently take it step-by-step at a pace that you're comfortable with.
I completed both my HBSc in Human Biology and PhD in Molecular Genetics at the University of Toronto and have several years of tutoring, mentorship, and university teaching experience across middle school, high school, undergraduate, and graduate levels. I have worked with students at different stages of their educational journey, and with different intentions on what they require assistance on.
Because I actively work in scientific research, I can also help students connect textbook biology to how experiments and biological questions are approached in the real world.
I am happy to work with:
- Middle-school students
- High-school students
- Undergraduate students
- Graduate students
- Students preparing for tests or exams
- Students looking for ongoing weekly support
- Students who need help understanding scientific literature or research concepts
Online lessons are available, as well as limited in-person tutoring in Vancouver depending on location.

The sciences become much easier when concepts are connected rather than memorized.
My approach focuses on helping students understand the mechanisms behind what they are learning and then apply that understanding to unfamiliar concepts, questions, experiments, and scientific problems.
Lessons and tutoring can be adapted to your grade, course, goals and as examples may include:
- Middle-school math and science core concepts
- High-school math and science core concepts and preparation for university science
- Introductory and advanced university biology
- Cell and molecular biology
- Genetics and gene expression
- Biochemistry
- Stem-cell and developmental biology
- Immunology and related biomedical sciences
- Experimental design and research methods
- Reading and interpreting scientific papers
- Understanding figures, datasets, and experimental results
- Preparing for exams, presentations, and oral discussions
- Advanced topics in molecular/cellular research
For middle and high school students, I focus on ensuring that they understand the core concepts, how they tie together in the larger picture, work on improving their relation of concepts to real life, and improving confidence in the subject and overall test scores.
For university and graduate students, I can also help develop scientific reasoning skills: understanding why an experiment was designed a certain way, interpreting results, identifying limitations, and connecting findings to the broader biological question.
I adapt sessions to the student. Some students benefit most from diagrams and conceptual explanations, while others need practice questions, active recall, paper discussion, or help identifying gaps in their understanding.
My goal is not simply to get through the next assignment, it is to help you become comfortable reasoning through complex problems independently.
